Elizabeth Hillman nee Standen
« on: Thursday 06 March 14 00:48 GMT (UK) »
Hello listers,
I cannot find much about my 5th great grandmother Elizabeth Standen. On the old IGI it stated she was b.abt. 1698 Balcombe Sussex, no parents mentioned. She marr. 8 Apr 1719 at Lewes Sussex to William Ilman (or Hillman). They had 7 children. In the East Sussex Coroner's Records 1688-1838 Vol 89 entry 329. Elizabeth on 12 May 1739, was feloniously killed in her own home, by Sarah Goldsmith (wife of Joseph), and she was found not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter, she was burnt on the hand and then discharged. The children of Elizabeth gave evidence at the Grand Jury.
If someone may be able to help find who Elizabeth's parents were and would there be anything in the local newspapers and if so where we I get that information.
Many thanks, Ducie in Australia

The licence for their marriage, issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 8th April, states that she is of Balcombe and William is of Ardingly.  That only means at the time of the marriage though.  They actually married in East Grinstead on April 9th.
There are not many Standen entries in Balcombe on the Sussex Marriage Index though lots in surrounding villages.    What did she call her children?   Often they are family names.   Where were they baptised?

Unfortunately those old IGI "birth" entries (not included on the new site as they were meaningless) were created on the assumption that all brides were 21 at marriage and all grooms were 25, and that they were born in the place where they were resident at marriage.

So they will have got the b abt 1698 by deducting 21 years from the 1719 marriage date, and got the Balcombe "birthplace" from the marriage records too.  In fact she could have been any age (though young enough to bear 7 children) and could have been born anywhere.

Bear in mind that those old entries were created for the purposes of the LDS church and not for family historians :)

Have you found a burial for Elizabeth, and if so was her age recorded?

Many thanks to sillgen and avm228 for their help. Actually William and Elizabeth had 2 children before they married. They were living in South Malling at the time of Elizabeth's death. Her date of death was stated as 12 May 1739 in the trial records. The children were baptised at St Thomas Cliffe. That was from the Parish Registers, I hired out a film from LDS. My 4 X great grandfather was the fifth child in the family.
