Patrick Duffy - Boston, Massachusetts
« on: Tuesday 04 March 14 16:01 GMT (UK) »
My 3x Great Grandmother's family were the Duffys, who mostly settled at New Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, Scotland after the Irish famine. On her's, as well as her sibling's marriage and death certificates, their parents are named as Patrick Duffy and Marjory Harkins.

Today, I have came across a death record of a Patrick Duffy b. circa. 1832, Ireland who died in Boston, Massachusetts on 1st December 1893. His parents are named as Patrick Duffy and 'Margery' Harkins. I believe this Patrick to be another sibling of my 3x Great Grandmother.

I wonder if anyone would be able to help find records of this Patrick Duffy in the US, if he had any family etc. I'm in England, and I'm afraid I'm not that familiar with US records and where to look for them really.  ::)

Thank you in advance  ;D

Unfortunately, the 1890 census was almost entirely destroyed by fire, so that might make things a bit more difficult here.  Also, there seem to be quite a few Patrick Duffys in Boston.  The 1880 and earlier census records are available on www.familysearch.org.  It might be worth checking to see if you can find anything about him in Ireland/Scotland, so you can narrow down when he might have come to the US.

The transcribed death record says the death place was "Rear 4 Webber St."  In the 1893 Boston city directory, I see a Patrick Duffy, laborer, whose home was rear 8 Webber.  Maybe that's him?

Hello - and thanks for the quick reply!

It's a struggle to find any Irish records really, and I haven't been able to find any on this side of the family. As far as I know, Patrick Duffy didn't move to Scotland at all. He certainly isn't living with the rest of his siblings in the Scottish census.

As for those city directories, they do all seem to be the right Patrick, as he was a ropemaker on the death record. As Patrick was clearly there on the 1870, is there a way to find Patrick living at 4 Webber Street then? I'm going to check FamilySearch for the census now.

Thanks!

This Patrick Duffy was living at 4 Webber for the 1880 census - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MHXT-HGH

The 1870 census doesn't give a street address, but this looks like the same family - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MD3T-8PN
