Thanks so much for the info about The Bedford. The timing is absolutely fine - it was John Houston's son who was being married in 1864. It was his third marriage and he was 70.

John Houston is the one I am really looking for information on. I only have his name from his son's BMDs. I have no idea where John came from or where he ended up, so any information at all can potentially help.

I just can't tell you how great it is to have that information. I have been sitting on that certificate for so long without realising it. At the weekend I went back to re-examine all my information along this line and realised there was this little snippet that I had missed at the time. It certainly puts John in some kind of framework which I have been lacking up until now.
