Year and Regiment required from photo please?
« on: Sunday 02 March 14 21:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I am after pinning down the year and the regiment of the soldier in this photo? It was taken in Leicester and I believe he is in the Leics Rgt, but would like your views along with a possible year?

Many thanks in advance.

Tommy

I would suggest a pre 1939 marriage and yes it appears to be the Leicestershire Regiment.

His belt is part of the 1937 pattern webbing equipment and OR is correct Leicestershire Regiment.

Hi all,

Many thanks for all the replies, please keep them coming. The photo I believe was taken in Leicester. Macintosh, was the 1937 webbing used from that date and if so until when? Or was it like CS95 which came out later than the date in its title.

OR thanks aswell, I think this is around the correct date too. I think I need to work out the window in which this uniform type was in service.

Thanks again all and as I say keep sending replies and thoughts....
Much appreciated
Tommy

The 1937 pattern was still around in 1960, the new 1959 pattern was issued to my regiment around 1961 if memory serves me right.
Google "when did 1937 pattern webbing come into use"  and select the 1st item on wiki

Good evening,

Certainly pre WW2 but only just perhaps. He has the belt from the new Braithwaite equipment as pointed out. He is however wearing the old style uniform which was superceded by the new universal battledress in 1938.

It did however take a while to equip all the regt's with this and so some units went to war initially in the old uniform and equipment.

A check with the Leicesters museum would tell you when they acquired the new uniform (BDs)
