Thanks for that, I guess I was thinking of births in the parish register, which do show parents names, as I recently got information for a relative in 1890. Forgot that deaths don't show that.
Never mind.
I don't have access to Ancestry at the moment, can you tell me more on the Mary Ellison as living in St Helens for those dates you mention, 1901. If it shows birth place as Hampshire, maybe this could be our Maria.
We do have a sister Mary Ellison b. 1828, but she died same year.
This is quite a mixed up family , 5 children born in Manchester, baptised at Manchester Cathedral, next one William born in Enniskillen Ireland (have birth certificate) in 1831, then Maria born 1836 at Portsmouth. Father Lawrence Ellison was initially a Porter with the Railways, then joined the Army around 1830, it seems his wife Judith joined him on two occasions, resulting in these two births, but Lawrence died in 1845 at Portsmouth. Mother Judith Ellison was living on her own by 1841 census, in the Workhouse.
If we could find Maria maybe in a Workhouse, we might get a better picture of what happened to Judith's young children.
