Help!!
« on: Friday 28 February 14 21:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am posting this in the Kent section, but this is because I need to start somewhere!!My 4 x great grandmother Mary Mellhuish was born in Margate in 1800 to a Joseph Mellhuish and Elizabeth ?
We believe they may have possibly been an Army family.Certainly the latter generations were.
Our problem is that we do not know anything about Joseph and Elizabeth, either where they were born, married ,her maiden name, other children etc. We have looked on censuses especially in Devon where Mary ended up but no joy.
We have looked for years!! Any help would be much appreciated but we have reached a brick wall
Kind Regards
Nooshie

Hi

I can see where it may be difficult to get a hold on your ancestor because the name Mellhuish  could be Mellash or Mellish on records.   Try the LDS site family search.org it may be able to help
I notice there is a Mary Mellash marriage 23.12.1820 in Speldhurst Kent to a Robert Crowhurst
if Mary died in Devon do you know her maried name? it may be useful to send for this certificate.

Regards Jane

Hi
We have everything we need on Mary she married in Plymouth to an army man Richard Andrews (can't trace him back either), we just cannot find out anything about her parents.

You say you have everything you need to know about Mary but for us that are trying to help it aids us to have some background of her to substantiate what you say.   For instance, I can't find any trace of her or her husband in Devon on census so wondering how you know she was born in Margate.  When and where exactly did she die?

Have found the marriage in East Stonehouse 27/3/1820.    I note that the baptism you say is her was in name of Mary Mallish bp.6/4/1800 Margate, dau. of Joseph and Elizabeth.

However, a Mary Melluish was bp.27/5/1798 Plymouth, Devon, also dau. of a Joseph and Elizabeth, and would have thought this Mary was more likely to have been the one to marry Richard Andrews.

Not being able to find a Mary Andrews born Margate ca.1800 on the census makes me ask how you have established that's where your Mary came from.

Point taken .To clarify our ancester has Margate as her place of birth on all censuses
She lived to a ripe old age,had a number of children, married twice latterly to a Robert Hunter. She was definitely born in Margate.
