His obituary in the Kentish Weekly Post, 16 Sep 1825, describes Charles as "... bookseller and printer". He was 79 and most of the obit was taken up with his acting prowess.

In 1821 he had an advert inserted in the paper re.a lost dog and referred to "The Shakespeare Printing Office, Market-place"

In addition to what has gone before on this subject - I've now got hold of all of Mate's broadside copy and find that he introduced his son to the trade so that some copy has 'Mate and Son' on it - I guess c. 1820-1825.

The difficulties lie in parameters.  Mate was a joint proprietor of the Margate theatre at one stage (a partnership dissolved in 1822) but it appears that he had interests in (owned?) a theatre in Dover before this and then returned to it...This is how I read the various snippets.

Quite willing to be corrected on any of this.

Ditto his sea-going career before he became involved in the theatre.  It can't have been a long service; but I'm unable to find dates (incidentally, his son was also something of a mariner and was killed whilst loading a ship).

Any offers?
