How to open .docx file
« on: Tuesday 25 February 14 14:11 GMT (UK) »
Trying to open a .docx file which I loaded onto my memory stick at the local library, onto my Windows xp home computer, I get a dialogue box with "Windows can not open this file......needs to know what program created it."   If I try to open it in "Notebook"  all I get is a computerised page of numbers and symbols.    Can anyone advise me what to do?    Many thanks. byegeorge.

This can be done with versions of "Word". Not knowing what programs you have, have a look at the options.

Microsoft Office Word Document (.docx). You can download a viewer from Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=4

There are also various sites which will perform a conversion. The one I use most is Zamzar - this is totally free, but there's an option to pay for an enhanced service.

Or you could download OpenOffice?
It's free and very similar to MS Word, Excel and so forth.

Also free is a lightweight WP called Abiword which should not be overlooked. As it's just a word processor it's much handier than Open or Libre Office and it is capable of writing as well as reading .docx and a myriad of other file types. (More than my version of Open Office anyway!)

Can you save it at the library in .doc format then if you have Word you can open it.
If it is just text you could save it as a .txt format or given the option as a PDF then you will be able to read it at home on Adobe Acrobat reader (free)

One simple option I have used is to open the file as html then copy the content and paste it into MS Office Word.

Thanks everyone for answering my query.  I will give all the suggestions a try, and hope for the best.     I did try to download the PDF DOWNLOAD, but somehow it would not go through the download process.  Which is a pity because it says "from doc to pdf"      Thanks again. byegeorge
