Unusual death registration?
« on: Monday 24 February 14 21:05 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone ever seen a birth registration such as this below? I found it on Family Search in the Irish Civil Registration Indexes. The event place is given as Ireland and there is no registration district or volume number.

I'm trying to locate my great grandfathers death record. He was born in Londonderry. He was a seaman. I have found him on a couple of crew lists and it gives his approximate birth year as 1861-62. I'm wondering if this might be a "death at sea" record.

Also what are my chances of getting a copy without a district and volume number.

Might be tricky. You could send GROI in Roscommon the details you have and see if they can find it. Otherwise if the death was in Derry or one of the other 5 counties which are now in NI you might get a hit when the GRONI records go online, currently scheduled for early April.

It looks like you could be right about the death at sea. There is one showing on Findmypast. the ship mentioned is the buffalo. I don't have a subscription to see the full record, just had a few credits to see the transcript.

 :)

Hello Halfpenny

Rats...I just let my sub expire in December. I thought I read that they had a separate heading for deaths at sea but I don't see it  ::) Did I imagine that?

No other information on the image, just his name and that he died in the 10th month.

Yes they do have a death at sea heading, it is in the drop down menu.

Thanks Halfpenny:)

I found it. I'm sure it's the record that is referenced. Marine death 22 Oct 1904 - Edward MacGowan. Right quarter and spelling.

Thanks Groom,

I decided to take a one month sub and looked at the image attached. I have a feeling that this may be my Edward McGowan. It's the closest I've come so far. The McGowans have been a real brick wall for me.

I wonder if a marine death by accident would merit some sort of inquiry?

Death at sea was a common occurrence and I doubt this incident would have warrented a Board of Trade enquiry.
Edward Macgowen, Able Seaman, age 41 died on the 22/October/1904 on board the vessel BUFFALO official number 118338. Cause of Death "Falling into hold" he was born and lived in Londonderry.
The vessels logbook would have recorded the event.
The crew agreement and possibly the logbook of BUFFALO for 1904 is lodged in
Cumbria Record Office and Local Studies Library, Whitehaven
The crew agreement may give some personal details such as his next of Kin, address etc. It depends on who wrote it.
