« on: Monday 24 February 14 14:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi, my mum has recently received her adoption records on there it states that she has an older sister that was also given up for adoption, just want to know if anyone knows what we should do to try and find her.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mandy,
I'm sure another RootsChatter with more experience in these matters will give you some good advice.  In the meantime you could look for a birth registration on FreeBMD, Ancestry etc in the right time-frame & location as your mother's birth registration with the same mothers surname(I presume the documents you have don't mention this sisters name?) From there I'm not sure what the legalities are.  I know you can't access this older sisters adoption papers so you wont know what her adoptive name is  :(  Perhaps you could contact the same authorities that you dealt with  concerning your mothers papers & seek their advice.
I hope your mum finds her sister  :)

I would try the social services who held your mother's records first and see if they can be of help.

Thanks Jane, my mum was adopted in Manchester and her sister was adopted in Essex (her birth mother was from Essex) Her name and date of birth is on my mums records so I've requested her birth certificate.

Hi Mandy

I don't know what information MargP has sent you but there are many ways for your mum to approach this.

Firstly try the GRO adoption contact register

https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records/the-adoption-contact-register

she might be lucky if her sister has been trying to look for her.

The sister may not of course know she's been adopted so there may not be anything there.

Is there any chance of you finding out the sister's name after adoption? If there is, there are the normal marriage and address searches you can do as you would with any ancestor.

If you can't find the name, then you'll have to go through the official routes and use an intermediary service.

There's more information here

Thanks Dawn, do you know how we could find out what her name was after adoption?

Only by accessing her official file through an intermediary.

There is no way of linking an entry in the birth index with one in the GRO Adopted Childrens Index unless you know both names or someone in the family knows.

Sorry.

If you are UK based, phone the adoptions section at the GRO in Southport 0300 123 1837, they can be extremely helpful.
