Free BMD website Query
« on: Monday 24 February 14 13:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Please could someone explain why when I use the Free BMD website to search for a marriage I can only find an entry on an index for that person and it doesn't say who their spouse is, but someone has previously replied to one of my posts with full information (example below) that they got from Free BMD:-

Marriages Sep 1909
on same page:
HARROD  Wilhelmina Mary
WALLER  Arthur George S
Bromley 2a 116

Thanks

They probably checked the 1911 census to see who married who.

You have found your first entry - say Wilhelmina Mary Harrod - and the page number is 1116.  If you then click on that page number, it will show you the other people listed on that particular page.  In 1909 there will only be four names - two male and two female.  Earlier entries may have up to 8 names per page.  After 1913 the entry for Wilhelmina would also show you the surname of the gentleman she married, and again his full name would be displayed if you clicked on the page number.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

Appleyard - WRY

You can sometimes be lucky on checking births after the marriage date,to work out who married whom.

Mothers maiden names are given in births from 1912 onwards.
