John George Barnard marriage certificates

Dear Rootschat,
Firstly my sympathies to the family of Mike of Leicester - he helped me a great deal in my searches.
My query - I have 3 marriages connected to John George Barnard - his own in Leicester 10.6.1805; his second in Rogate, Sussex June, 1822; (there is time for an earlier third one c. 1798 but I have no evidence for this); and his son James in Godmanchester, Hunts.  6.11.1838. What I would like to know is: would the marriage certificates reveal any more than is already in the church registers and if so where would I get copies of these? I am still trying to find out where JGB came from. Or are these marriages too early to contain anything more?

Civil Registration, and therefore Marriage Certificates, began on 1st July 1837.

So there won't be MC's for the earlier 2 marriages.
There MAY be a certificate for the latest marriage, but registration wasn't compulsory until 1873(?).

However even the 1838 certificate won't have anything else different to the church registers,  if you have seen the actual register entry,  it will give fathers and professions and witnesses,  but the civil registration marriage certificate is a copy of the church register entry.

There MAY be a certificate for the latest marriage, but registration wasn't compulsory until 1873(?).

It's mainly births that fall into this 'missing' category. It is not unknown though for marriage entries to be missing because the vicar was too slow getting his quarterly returns to the local register office and then onto the GRO.
