Herbert Hoyland 1879 sheffield
« on: Saturday 22 February 14 23:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I am looking for help finding the parents of Herbert Hoyland born 1879 in Sheffield and died 1946. I have his father as a Thomas Housley Hoyland born 1839 Sheffield and his mother as a Sarah born around 1840 in Derbyshire. If anyone can help me find more out about his mother I'd much appreciate it.

Thank you all

Have you checked freebmd for his parents marriage to establish Sarah's maiden name

You would have to buy a copy of one of the childrens birth certs to get her maiden name

Firstborn was 11yrs old in 1881 so marriage will be pre-1870 and the only one that fits on freebmd is 1867 to Sarah Hopkinson or Sarah Wain in Chesterfield

However - I would still get a birth cert to be sure.  Would have been easier if Thomas had used his middle name when he married ::)

Specific birthplace for Sarah in 1881 is Pilsley

1851 shows Sarah Hopkinson b 1839 Pilsley

Hi

I would take Carole's advice and when your funding allows purchase either Herbert b 1879 or one of the other siblings of this family of Thomas and Sarah Hoyland butcher on censuses 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 c and 1911 c Where Sarah has passed away by 1911 the but Thomas still alive ( No mention of a initial H in Thomas name in all the censuses)

A Thomas Housley Hoyland died 3 rd of June 1896 Unless this was his father. ?? (can't find his death in Freebmd or age at death 1896 or a parish burial age 1896) ???

Google  > Thomas Housley Hoyland

1896 Wills index post 1858

Thomas Housley Hoyland of Cedar cottage, banner cross Sheffield -agent died 3 June 1896
at Degema New Calabar Africa Administration London
Name in Will Fredrick Hoyland tailor and draper -Effect £2937

Your Thomas lived on London Road Sheffield
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Thank you all for this wonderful help.

One question I have; what does it mean he was an agent? And does anyone know what the degema African administration in London is? I've googled it but can find nothing.

I don't think this is anything  to do with your Thomas father of Herbert Hoyland who were both alive 1911

As said by Carole 'W' you need clarity of Herbert's birth certificate 1879 to confirm exactly who was the parents of Herbert. Then work back from true foundations of your tree. :-\

For info only

All I can think he was in charge of the office as agent rep for whatever - Degema New Calabar Africa Administration London was.
