August Kirste Bremen born 1859

My husbands grandfather changed his name in 1913  to Curtis and we were lucky to have a copy of this.
His Father August Kirste states in the 1911 census his birthplace  was Brenham Germany, he was a stoker  on a boat.
There is talk of him being a twin( there are many in the family ) but I have no idea how to go about finding August, as I know BRenham was a thriving port he may not have really come from there maybe just sailed from there.

He gives his rank as a smith on his wedding certificate.

Any tips would be very much appreciated

Hi - August Kirste is in my family tree. He was the father in law of my second cousin twice removed Henry Eagles (1882 - 1919). Henry married Rosetta Caroline KIrste in West Ham in 1906. Henry was born in Silvertown near West Ham in 1882. His parents were William Henry Eagles and Amelia Eagles (nee Fox).

William was born in Flaxley, Gloucestershire on 20th Feb 1855. He and Amelia moved to the West Ham area after their marriage in 1876 and are shown on the 1881 census are shown as living at 24 Upper Grey Street, West Ham.

If you are on Ancestry you can find my family tree (Beard Family Tree) and there and maybe you will be able to tell me if I have made any mistakes with the details of August's descendants.

Is this the same Augus Kirste I have on my sugarbakers database  www.mawer.clara.net/sugarkk.html  ?

Marriage 24 March at St Matthew, Bethnal Green.

(I've taken the name Kirste from the signature, whilst the curate has written Kirstle and A***y have indexed it thus.)

You say August was born in Bremen. This was a port from which young German labourers regularly left for London to work in the sugar refining industry. There was little employment in rural Lower Saxony at that time.

Bear in mind that the August we read for both father and son may well be a second forename in either or both cases. The regular usage of the second forename rather than the first was common in Germany.

FamilySearch has one or two that may fit the bill with August as a first name, but more, it would appear, with August as a second name.

Hi just noticed a message you posted several years ago concerning August Kirste. I am hopeful that you may have information that I have been trying to obtain and perhaps fill in some Gaps . My husbands grandfather Alfred Kirste the youngest son of August Kirste also changed his name to Curtis. I gathered some information 10 years ago but hit a brick wall so left researching this part of our family tree. As there seems to be more information online now I thought I would try again to see if I could carry on researching the Kirste/Curtis family tree further.

He hasn’t done his DNA
I’m thinking that Alfred is my husbands great Uncle , his grandfather was Richard Curtis son of August

Thank you for getting back to me.
Yes you are correct that Alfred was your husbands great Uncle .

Yes there are twins in the family Alfred had ten children Two being twins a boy and girl. Carol and Lionel.

My Husbands father Richard Ernest Curtis is the seventh child of Alfred .

Alfred died in 1978 aged 77. I notice on the ancestry site that on the McLean family tree that it is noted that he married twice this is incorrect he only married the once to Winifred Annie Jessie Paul on the 9th March 1925. She died on the 14/07/2000 and they are both buried at Paulton.

What we know is that Alfred changed his name to Curtis from Kirste. What we don’t know is when and why . I note you said Richard Herman Kirste also changed his name to Curtis in 1913. Did they change their names at the same time and why did not all of the family change their names . We also heard that August was a Civilian German internee in the 1st world war but am unsure if this is true .

Any information would be great.

Keith my husband is very excited to learn of his second cousin

Sadly his mum Joyce Born Curtis died last year she was the last nod Richards children

They changed there name because of the war  presumably because they didn’t want to be interned even though Augustus children were born in England I expect the German name was   Not something You wanted in those times

 We do have a photo copy of Richards change of name legally   Would would like a copy let me know maybe Alfred  did his at the same time? Or even the sane place
It’s very interesting the twin thing which lends more substance to the story I heard that August was a twin

We don’t have the photo but Keith’s mum used to tell me there was a photo of her father Richard in horse back I’m guessing 1WW
It makes sense that August would have been an internee

If you email me I will send you a photo of Joyce and Keith maybe there is a family resemblance ?

I spoke once to a relative of Charles once another Brother ?
Anyway would love to help it will take me away from my brick walls lol
