Williamson, 1851 or 1861 Census
« on: Wednesday 22 June 05 01:20 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to find the parents of my great great grandfather, William williamson. He was born in abt 1847 in Newcastle Upon Tyne. His Fathers name is Alexander, occupation was a ships Carpenter. I don't have any details on his mother. He came to Australia as a stowaway in the 1860's... I was wondering if anyone had access to the 1851 or 1861 census they could see if the family is listed at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks.

Kind Regards

Bronwyn,

For the 1851 census, the city of Newcastle is covered by five census districts...

All Saints
Byker,
St Andrew's
St Nicholas' and
Westgate.

Available for each, is a Surname Index, from which can be ascertained  the appropriate name, age, and census page reference number. Then if census pages are available, it is an easy matter to navigate to the approriate page and gather the required info.

Right then.... the only William Williamson in those five Newcastle Indexes, that came anywhere your target was...

Census 1851 Sandgate*, Newcastle.
Ref Piece 2407 Folio 680 Page 35.

Head William Marr, 24 yrs,violin maker,born Newcastle(N/C)
Wife Hannah Marr, 21, b.N/C
Son John Marr, 2, b.N/C
Servant Elizabeth Williamson unmarried, 24, General Servant, b.N/C.
William Williamson, 2, b N/C

* Sandgate is area at Newcastle Quayside.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for looking that up for me. The entry doesn't seem to be a relation, not directly atleast anyway, could be aunts/uncles etc thou.

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers

Bronwym,

It gets better, but not a lot !

Family group in All Saints census district of Newcastle 1851.

Alexander Williamson 27 yrs
Mary Williamson, 27,
Jane Williamson, 1.

Census ref was Piece 2407 Folio 172.

Unfortunately I did not have access to the census pages, so I could not get specific address, relationships, occupation , birthplaces etc....

But I am confident if you post sa look-up request wirth the 2407-172, you will get details enough, to eliminate this trio or otherwise.
