Mary Walker - searching for her maiden name 1803 Stickford
« on: Thursday 20 February 14 03:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find out the maiden name of a Mary Walker.  I think she is my Great x 3 Grandmother and married my Great x 3 Grandfather William Herringshaw 8 August 1803, Stickford, Lincolnshire.

The marriage record shows that she was a widow so I am assuming that Walker was the surname of her first husband.  I've tracked down her burial record and this shows that she was 70 in 1847.  She was buried 1 October 1847 in Scothern, Lincolnshire.  So using this age would mean that she was born in 1777.  This is assuming that the age was correct.

I have done a  marriage search thru FreeReg  to find grooms with the surname Walker ( 10 years prior to 1803 ) marrying a Mary in Lincolnshire.  There are a few of them.  I noticed on the 1803 marriage record that the bride made her mark.  This being the case she would also have made her mark on the earlier marriage record.  I think I will then look more closely at the ones that show the bride made a mark instead of signing her name.

I have the following on the list

Mary Smith ( Widow ) married John Walker 3 Sept 1794 Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire
Mary Thompson married William Walker 15 June 1798 Wyberton, Lincolnshire
Mary Wright married George Walker 20 June 1798 Gedney, Lincolnshire
Mary Haynes married John Walker 30 Dec 1799 Grantham, Lincolnshire
Mary Thompson married John Walker 13 May 1793 Saxby All Saints, Lincolnshire

Even if I think I may have found the marriage it will only be the correct one if the groom then dies.

I'm hoping that someone may know about Mary Walker and be able to give me some background. Or perhaps suggest other ways that I can figure out this jigsaw.

Thanks

Hi

I think i may be able to narrow down my selection of possible Mary's.  I am inclined to rule out Mary Wright who married George Walker ( Gedney) as there is a Mary Walker who dies in Gedney 1805 aged 32.  Also adding Mary Haynes who married John Walker ( Grantham ) because there is a Mary Walker married to a John having children after 1803 in Grantham.

At this stage I am leaning towards my Mary being Mary Thompson.  The one married to William Walker.  This is due to the fact that I have found a death in 1802 of a Willaim Walker in Bicker.  He was buried 04 Aug 1802 at St Swithin aged 29 years.  Alas the FreeReg information doesn't show if he was married or not.

Does my reasoning sound feasible?

Thanks
