Records of marriage licences St David's Liverpool (Welsh church)
« on: Wednesday 19 February 14 20:19 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone could tell me whether records of marriage licences issued for the Liverpool area exist.  I'm trying to trace more information on the marriage of James Faggetter and Mary Hughes who were married on 22nd September 1836 by licence in St David's Chapelry, Brownlow Hill, Liverpool.  I've tried searching on Ancestry and FindMyPast as well as a wider search on the net, but so far I can't see if these records exist, and if they do, where they might be located.

I've seen the entry in the parish register but I was hoping that the licence may give me another few snippets of information.  James was a Queen's Messenger and seems to have travelled all over the country so it has been a bit of a job to track his movements!  He was born in Bristol, married for the first time in Liverpool, married for the second time and died in London.

A visit to the clergyman issuing the licence resulted in three documents, an allegation or affidavit, a marriage bond and the licence. The actual licence was issued to the bridegroom who presented it to the priest conducting the marriage. The licence could then have been kept by the priest, or returned to the diocesan registries, or given to the couple on their wedding day and kept within the family, but usually does not survive. The allegation and bond would be filed in the Diocesan Registry. After 1823 bonds ceased to be necessary.

This church was on the site of the current Adelphi Hotel. The hotel existed at the same time but was later rebuilt and extended taking over the land where the church once stood.

James and Rebecca had a daughter called Mary Ann Henrietta.  She married my Great great grandfather John Callander and their grandson was my grandfather Henry Callander if you get my convoluted drift?!  Where do you fit it please?!

If you are still looking for James' marriage licence it is on FindMyPast. Go to marriages and then for the final bit you want Cheshire Marriage Licence Bonds etc
