Thanks for all the replies . As the street was named in the early 1950`s most of the "elderly" are no longer with us . The Council could not help . The best they could offer was that it may have been named after a nearby natural feature . After checking an old map they were none the wiser. Possibly the name was picked up wrongly in the past & was changed inadvertently . Graham .

If you had read Stampstone's reply, and read the content of the link he supplied and the reference I also mentioned, you would have found that his explaination was correct, as this is also the case in relation to other street names and districts in the area.
