Looking for first wife
«

My ancestor Thomas Cowling married Anne Swainson on 7 April 1788 in Pateley Bridge. He was a widower and she was a spinster according to the website I found the information on.
Thomas and Ann had three sons between c1788 and 1792.
I have no idea who his first wife was or when/where she was born so I would be very grateful if anyone could give me some advice on finding her.
Thanks.

I've tried Family Search, but nothing, I'm afraid.

I've looked at a few sites as well and couldn't find anything. I think I'll contact the site I got the information from to see if they know anything else.

H Gibby, on the F/search IGI (indexed) there is the marriage to Anne, then there is a marriage to a Jane moodd
25/09/1800, so is it possible that Anne was his first wife? Dave.

Where did you find the marriage of Thomas and Anne, where it showed Thomas as a widower? Have YOU seen the parish register entry?
If you use Family Search, then that is only a
search
guide - you HAVE to see the parish registers, where extra information is often recorded.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids. They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

I have not seen the parish registers myself.
I found the information on the wharfegen website that was given to me by another Roots member recently when I had a different query about my Cowling family.
I cannot get out to see these things with my own eyes as I am a wheelchair user so access is a major problem.

Thomas Cowling died on 15 December 1833 and his wife Anne on 5 May 1846.
Both are buried at St Cuthbert's in Pateley Bridge. I found this information on another very useful website.
