Bogg Family in Magherafelt Church Records

If you put Magherafelt genealogist into Google I think you could come up with someone who is a genealogist living in Magherafelt who also runs a B and B. He can either look things up for you from either of Magherafelt's churches or put you up so that you can go and do the research yourself! I found him helpful and reasonable in his rates though this was five years ago!

I was also trying to find a living cousin in Ireland who might be connected to my long lost Irish roots or anyone else who could help me further with my ancestors! They all seem to have left Magherafelt so I don't know where they ended up! My 3 x great grandfather John Boggs was born in Magherafelt in 1757 and christened at the Anglican church. His parents were John Bogs and Sarah Morgan. He had a brother James and sisters Mary and Catherine. John Bogs and Sarah Morgan were married at St. Columb Cathedral, Londonderry in 1746. Can anyone help? France

This topic was started in 2006 (the original poster died several years ago and the other members posting here haven't been online for awhile). Since the Coleraine NIFHS church reocrds project was completed lots of other resources have come online including this website-

I think the B & B you mean is Laurel Villa (formerly the home of a connection of mine).

If you'd like help on tracing your family it'd be best to start a new topic on the Londonderry board but records for that period will be scarce.

Thank you for your help in telling me about the new Maghera genealogy site. I did go on there but it is still under construction and I couldn't find any records for Magherafelt on it.
I was wondering if there are still people living in the area with the name Boggs? It is a rather rare name in England but seems more common in Ireland. I'm sorry but I can't work out how to start a new thread. What do I click on?

No Boggs in the current phone book for BT45 (which covers Magherafelt).

Looking at Bill McAfee's transcription of the 1831 Heads of Household Census there are just a handful of Bogg surnames for Londonderry.

For Derry City there are three occurrences :

Nancy (Priest's Lane)
William (Shipquay Street)
John (Skinner's Lane)

The remainder are :

James (Ballymagowan townland, Templemore parish)
Mary (Ballynagard townland, Templemore parish)
James (Kilnappy townland, Faughanvale parish)
Thomas (Kilnappy townland, Faughanvale parish)

All of these are within the greater area of the city of Londonderry with none in Co. Derry as would be the case of Magherafelt.

Thank you so much for your reply! Well I don't know whether this helps but I have printed off a copy of your email to put in my file maybe it may lead somewhere. It is very kind of you to help! As I live in England I am not very familiar with researching in Ireland and would appreciate any help I can get! I joined the Bogg/Boggs one name studies group in England and I was informed that none of my Bogg/Boggs family connected up with any other Bogg/Boggs families in England except where my 2 x great grandfather Edmund Bogg's children connected up with each other, except for one of Edmund's sisters Mary Ann Bogg who also settled in England. My 3 x great grandfather John Boggs joined the Royal Artillery and was sent to Quebec, Canada where he married Deborah Duff King. They were said to have had eleven children but it has been hard to trace them all because of their father being posted all over the place! I have found six of them so far but as only Edmund Bogg and Mary Ann Bogg settled in England what happened to the others. Did they all die? There are no death records for any of the others in England. Do you have a Bogg/Boggs one name studies group in Ireland? Thank you again!

Leaving surname variants aside, a general indication of the Boggs surname distribution is provided by the Ireland census records and Griffiths Valuation and both of these point to the surname being very much to the North of Ireland. 

For example, the 1901 census brings back 169 individual people called Boggs, by County: Donegal 70; Tyrone 55; Londonderry 28; Antrim 5; Down 5; Wicklow 4; Westmeath 2. 

The Irish Times analysis of Griffiths Valuation 1847-1864 shows 35 Boggs households, by county: Donegal 19; Londonderry 6; Down 5; Tyrone 2; Wicklow 2; Westmeath 1.

I'm sorry to hogg the limelight here but I'm still being dense about this site. I can find the blue reply button but not a blue 'new topic' button. Nor can I see a 'beginners' button. What do I click on on the heading that says  'Home Forum Help Search etc. to get me to the next stage. Nothing seems to take me there. Once you get to my age the brain cells are leaving the sinking ship!

Once I can do that I will crawl away and leave you in peace!
