Banns - Fuller/Knights?
« on: Monday 17 February 14 21:22 GMT (UK) »
I have a marriage for Henry 'Fallow' (Fuller) to Anne Knights in Kirstead 1798, but I cannot find the Banns anywhere. I have not been able to trace where Henry and Anne came from (though I have a few possibilities), so I was quite eager to find where the banns were read as I believe they would have been read in the parish they were from? Can anyone tell me why I can't find them anywhere? For Kirstead it does not appear that the banns are missing for this period in time.

The marriage record on 17/2/1798 shows both were of the parish of Kirstead so banns wouldn't have been read elsewhere.

Do you know why there would be no record of the banns in the parish? I have noticed that with his second marriage the same thing happened...no banns?

If you compare the Marriage register to the Banns register there seems to be a few Banns missing.

Maybe they came from a nearby parish and had to get married quickly ;), I think they only had to be in the parish three weeks to qualify to being of this parish.

Thanks Yokel. I thought there was something about only being resident three weeks. I presume they must have had a reason for a hasty marriage! Must be an unfortunate coincidence that his second lot of marriage banns are also missing.

It states Banns on the register, and Henry was only an agricultural labourer; I don't think they would have been a position to afford a licence. Thank you for the suggestion, though.

Some of my Ag Labourer ancestors married by licence, they had someone, mostly their employers, stand surety for the licence bond, the licences in those I've seen, the person/s who are standing surety are named .

Regards.
