Coleman Family Great Yarmouth area, Suffolk, ENG
« on: Wednesday 12 February 14 19:30 GMT (UK) »
My great great grandfather was Edmund Coleman b 1849 Corton, Gorleston, Suffolk, married Susanna Cagill (b 1848 Beccles, Suffolk, Eng - d 1929 Lethbridge Alberta Canada). Their children: Arthur b. 1873, Elizabeth b 1880 and Jane E. b? all born in the Great Yarmouth area.
Susanna was my great great grandmother, she arrived at Halifax Nova Scotia Canada Feb 24 1891 with Arthur and Elizabeth. Jane and Edmund did not emigrate. She remained in Lethbridge, Alberta. Elizabeth's whereabouts are unknown. Arthur returned to New Waterford, Nova Scotia and died in Stellarton Nova Scotia. He is my great grandfather.
I am unable to find dates of death for Jane E and Edmund.
I believe Edmund's father was John Coleman and his mother was Mary Ann ? b 1826.
Can anyone help fill in the blanks?
Thanks
J

I see Susanna, Arthur & Elizabeth B in 1891 census in Alberta Canada. In the household is John H Fleetwood a.33 & Jane M Fleetwood wife a.35.
Jane M Fleetwood was prior to marriage Jane martha  :) Cagill so maybe a sister to Susannah?
John Fleetwood & Jane Martha(Cagill) were married in Lincoln 1881. Vol 7a P 939.
They emigrated & arrived in Quebec in 1885.
You mentioned you have no further record of Elizabeth B - could it be possible that she died?

Thank you so much for all your hard work on my Coleman family search!
You've given me a great deal of information to work with.
Has anyone found a death date for Edmund Coleman b 1850 Gorton, Suffolk, England?
I know that Susannah Caghill Coleman left England in 1891, arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Feb 24 1891. But there doesn't seem to be any trace of Edmund. He did not make the trip to Canada.
Thanks again, you've all been wonderful with your responses.
Jan

Coleman is a direct line of mine although they arrive in my tree in 1833 and from Tivetshall Norfolk  I am aware of  extended ancestry that moved to Great Yarmouth Norfolk.

My Coleman line starts in Wymondham Norfolk in the mid 17th century, mid 18th century were in Pulham Market  Norfolk and mid 19th century Tivetshall Norfolk.

I have several John Colemans born first quarter of the  19th century which 'could' fit your "I believe Edmund's father was John Coleman and his mother was Mary Ann ? b 1826." although I have not followed through and researched their marriages, children or where they ended up

I have added this to your question should you find that once you have completed more research and have other identifying detail, 'IF' the Coleman line is the same, I have 200 years back research on that particular Coleman line, so could connect.

Coleman/Colman is a very common surname in East Anglia and of course many Coleman/ Colman researchers are trying to establish if they are related to THE Colman family of "Colmans Mustard" now part of the Unilever group, that was started by Jeremiah Colman in Norwich Norfolk You will find more information on here http://www.colmans.co.uk/ and http://www.heritagecity.org/

Hello out there
Thank you all for looking at my posts.
Thank you for filling in the blank as to WHY Susanna Coleman ( my great great grandmother) came to Canada.
Looks like her sister (thanks to your information) Jane Martha Fleetwood arrived here in 1885, leaving 2 of her children in England with Susanna. I have the passenger list from The Mongolian but did't connect the 2 children listed below the Coleman family with Susanna until your information. Susanna and all the children arrived in Halifax in 1891 and continued on to Lethbridge but I could never find out why. Jane and her husband must have travelled to Canada and then sent for the rest of the family.
I was also able to find tombstones for both Jane Martha and John Fleetwood and Susanna and her second husband Robert Burgess, all in Mountain View Cemetery in Lethbridge, Alberta.
Somewhere along the line, Susanna's son (my great grandfather) Arthur Coleman returned to Stellarton, Nova Scotia around 1900 and that's where we consider our "down home" to be to this day.
I'm still stuck trying to find out what happened to Susanna's first husband Edmund Coleman b 1850 Corton, Gorleston, Suffolk.
Anyone have any clues?
Thanks again
