Can you date this picture? James Sayner

I found this picture on ancestry, someone had attached it on their tree to my 4 x Great Grandfather James Sayner 1804-1853, I am not sure this is actually him. He lived in the Selby/Hambleton area and the photo appears to  have been taken in Harrogate.
Also if this does turn out to be taken before 1853,which I doubt I would like this picture restored and the writing removed if anyone is able to do so.
Much appreciated any help

Hi Star_boy. It won't be 1853, too early for these type of photos. The gent appears to be sporting a beard known as a Newgate Frill. I think these were more fashionable in the 1860's. Pity we can't see the back as the design might nail it. Myself I think it could be even later 1870's but I'm no expert.

Certainly isn't as early as 1853 though.

George is right of course.
Rounded corners on cardstock first arrived in 1875 so that's the earliest this can be.

The Newgate frill was popular up to the 1860's but some men clung onto it as this chap did.
