Hi radstockjeff,
I am currently at the Tyne Tunnel not very far at all from the address you seek help with.
The word MARU is I believe an Indian surname and South Shields is now and always has been very multi cultural. Mainly becuase of the docks and foreign sailors staying behind in South Shields rather than returning to their ships. Also Smiths Dock Company Ship builders were in started in South Shields and built ships named HOSEI MARU.
In Japenese the word MARU means round.
Perhaps a look on Google Earth for the location may reveal the shape.
I take it this is the family living there ...Pte George Edward Smith . British Army 19th Btn Northumberland Fusiliers from Maru House, 179, Stanhope Rd., South Shields
(d.30th Mar 1916)
Smith, George, Edward. Private, 19/705, Killed on 30th March 1916. Aged 22 years.
