179 Stanhope Road South Shields

Can anyone please help me with a look up in Wards or post Office Directory for the above address 1917/18/19.  I am not close enough to South Shields (300 miles) for a personal visit to the Library so I was hoping that some kind soul might be able to help or suggest a useful website which might have the info.

Address  179 Stanhope Road South Shields

Occupiers??

Unfortunately the latest Directory at http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp is Kelly's Directory of Durham, 1914.

probably a bit late with this info, presuming you have 1911 details you will see that the occupant is a member of clergy of the established church. The nearest C E church was St Oswins built circa 1910, a short way along Stanhope Road. the church was set back from the road with a grassed area to the front.
I am guessing this was/ not the vicarage, but being a large house was owned by the church.
The occupant was vicar of a church elsewhere in Durham for the period you are interested in.

The Kelly's 1914 shows Revd Bowcock vicar of St Oswins at 35 Stanhope Road and Edward Smith at 179. This confirms some later info re Edward Smith at 179 in 1917 from the Deans Methodist Church membership Register. I was trying to establish when Edward Smith moved from 9 Deans Terrace (1911 Census) to Stanhope Road. From the info now available it looks to be between 1911 and 1914. Not sure if Edward Smith rented or bought 179, but he then moved c1920 to Belle Vue in North Avenue  Harton

Having now established that the occupiers from 1912 until 1920 were Cllr Edward Smith , his wife and family I now have a further question about this property.

According to his son George's death notice (France March 1916) his address was given as Maru House, 179 Stanhope Road.

Could anyone suggest a reason for that name?

Hi radstockjeff,

I am currently at the Tyne Tunnel not very far at all from the address you seek help with.

The word MARU is I believe an Indian surname and South Shields is now and always has been very multi cultural. Mainly becuase of the docks and foreign sailors staying behind in South Shields rather than returning to their ships. Also Smiths Dock Company Ship builders were in started in South Shields and built ships named HOSEI MARU.
In Japenese the word MARU means round.
Perhaps a look on Google Earth for the location may reveal the shape.
