Deciphering a ship's manifest *COMPLETED WITH THANKS*
« on: Sunday 09 February 14 16:55 GMT (UK) »
Sailing from Southampton to New York in 1937.

(1) The home address reads:  348 So. Manislane, Detroit, Michigan.  Would this be South Manislane?  Or South Manis Lane?  I can't find either in Detroit today.  Perhaps someone has access to a 1937 Detroit city directory?

(2) The handwritten note above it reads:  "Johnst.-Gordon, Tiger(?) Ave."  Is this the name of a person or another address?  Could it be John Street?  This passenger's husband's name is Gordon, so that is her next of kin.  But I can't find Tiger Avenue in 1937 Detroit either.  Maybe in the neighbourhood of Tiger Stadium in Detroit?

(3) Why two addresses?

It's indicating that she will be in the care of her husband Gordon.

The first bit is C/O...care of.....then husb......Gordon.

If she was traveling by herself this would be indicated as women passengers who didn't have someone to vouch for them were handled separately by customs. This was to weed out women without support who may take to the streets for their livelihood. Many times these women were turned away and sent back home.

As to the second address that's hard to say without knowing the history of the passenger. Perhaps she had that address when she embarked but the husband moved them to a new residence while she was at sea.

Agree with Acinonyx re address South Manistique Ave. Detroit - It looks as if somebody corrected the spelling of Manistique.
first line is c/o husb Gordon

Thank you very much all.  Very helpful.  Manistique Avenue makes sense.

My new problem now is the name Johnathan.  On no other record found so far does this name appear.  The husband's full name was Gordon Hugh Sutherland.

Aha!  Yes, I can see that now in the handwriting, with a bit of imagination!  I'm happy with that.

Thank you all.  Query completed.
