Some Record Offices dont like you using scanners

Flat bed and/or hand held scanners are not allowed in our public rooms. The
light and static produced by scanners can cause damage to the documents.
There is also a risk of mechanical damage during handling and wherever the
scanner touches the document.

Always pays to check. At my records office you are able to use a wad scanner - you just have to pay £5 for a photo licence. Mind you the authority to do so is tucked away making it difficult to find. I simple asked and got the permission. It is also wise to carry a camera as well.
