Yes, that the year they came here.

I thought the second one was the best bet also.

Thanks very much Hoka for confirming the year of entry.

Must try and find out now whether Mathew was indeed married to an Annie.  It would be wonderful if the second 1910 entry was my Mathew.

Don't let the name Annie stop you. over here names didn't matter much, my aunt was Dorothy Lillian and I found her listed as Doris, My mother was Charlotte and went by Lottie, my sister is Lillian Ethel but known as Sue, I'm known as Hoka but name is John.
Good Luck, if I can help, let me know.

Hoka.

I have just found out about the Castle Garden site http://www.castlegarden.org/quick_search_detail.php?p_id=5452478 and found a possible for Mathew:

Mathew Mills, Laborer Age 22 Male
Arrived 23 April 1883
Origin: England
Port: Liverpool & Queenstown
Ship: City of Berlin
Destination: Michigan

Hoka very kindly looked at the US census for me and found this possible entry:

1910 Columbiaian Co., Ohio, 3-Wd, East Liverpool.
Mathew Mills, 47, Eng., married 22 yrs. US 1884, Expressman.
Annie, wife, 42, Eng., married 22 yrs. US 1887.
John, son, 20, Oh.
Elsie A., dau, 16, Oh.
Emma, dau, 11, Oh.
William H., son, 8, Oh.
Mary E., dau, 6, Oh.
Sarah J., dau, 3, Oh.
Thomas M., son, 1mo., Oh.

I would welcome some more advice how I would go about tracing some more information about Mathew.  Does it say anywhere on the US census whether someone wqs born in Wales.  Mathew was born in Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire.,

Many thanks

Jan

Thank you very much for the 1900 information.

I am going to keep all this on file until I can find some more definite proof of when he actually went to the US, and whether he married before he emigrated.

Jan :)

Thanks very much Yvonne.  I do appreciate you taking the time to look for Matthew for me.

I have a couple of possibilities for Matthew's wife - Sarah Lloyd or Mary Ann Bound.  Only possibilities at the moment because I need to request the marriage certificate to see whether I have the right Matthew, his father was a
Mat(t)hew too :-\  On the North Wales BMD marriage record his name is spelt Mathew, with only one T.

Would it be possible to search for either Sarah/Mary Mills with Mat(t)hew, and in the meantime I think I'll send for the marriage certificate.  At least if I use the local register office, I can specify the father's name, and get my £7 back if it's wrong!!!!

Just a final point - when he was in Montgomeryshire he was a painter & glazier :-\

Thanks once again
