Navy records help info needed please
« on: Friday 07 February 14 17:17 GMT (UK) »
Hello all
Could anyone help with information as to whether the information detailed below is all that the Royal Navy discloses when applying for service records. This was all that my friend received in 1997 and is a lot less than I have just received from Glasgow for my grandfathers records which included signing up forms etc.
Name Harold Taylor service number JX417761 joined 16 December 1942 and served as ordinary seaman and acting able seaman until he was released in class A on 29 June 1946.

His character was assessed as very good through naval service.

Listed below are the ships/shore establishments where your farther served.
HMS RALEIGH from 16 December 1942 - training establishment at Torpoint
HMS PEMBROKE  from 23 February 1943 - Chatham depot
HMS ST CHRISTOPHER from 30 March 1943- coastal forces training base at fort William
HMS HORNET from 30 April 1943 -coastal forces base in Gosport
HMS ST CHRISTOPHER (MGB 674) from 17 May 1943 - motor gun boat based at fort William
HMS HORNET (MGB 127) from 18 July 1943 -motor gun boat based in Gosport
HMS MINOS (MANTIS) from 3 September 1943 - coastal forces base in Lowestoft
HMS HORNET from 15 November 1943 - coastal forces base Gosport
HMS HORNET (MGB 326) from 30 December 1943 - motor gun boat based in Gosport
HMS ATTACK from 26 July 1944 - coastal forces base at Portland
HMS FOX from 1 January 1945 - naval base at Lerwick
HMS BEEHIVE from 1 April 1945- coastal forces base in Felixstowe
HMS GADFLY from 28 July 1945 - coastal forces base in Flensberg
HMS PEMBROKE from 29 April 1946 - depot in Chatham
His occupation prior to joining the Royal Navy was a builders labourer.
Finally naval records show that your farther was born on 3 August  1924 in Manchester

This is all on one A4 piece of paper with no copies of signing on papers or discharge papers so is this all the navy supply or is it because he haven't asked for the correct information from them ? My friend has also told me his farther was a member of the SBS could this be why ?

It looks like he received a typed summary rather than photocopies of the originals. It is usually best to specifically ask for photocopies when applying for records, otherwise they take it upon themselves to send such summaries.

He could contact them again and ask for copies of the originals, though as it's been 17 years he may have to pay again.
