Charles and William Lawrence
« on: Thursday 06 February 14 22:39 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking to establish the parentage of Charles Lawrence born about 1834 in Kent.
He would be my GreatGrandfather.
On 1881 and 1891 census he is noted as from Deal working as an agricultural labourer.

At time of marriage to Elizabeth Hammond (born Gardiner) in Gt Mongeham 1854 his father is noted as William Lawrence.
Have looked through all the census returns but prior to seeing the marriage certificate I went down a different route looking at a Stephen Lawrence which must have been incorrect.

There are a couple of Charles' on 1841 census return but none with a father called William.
Any suggestions or help appreciated.

Thanks, Martin

You say he is an ag lab in 1881/1891 but the likely candidate I can see in 1881 is a 45 yr old malt maker, born Deal and living in Buckland.

In 1891 he is a 56 yr old maltsman, born Middle Deal and living in Buckland.

Is that him? Presumably so given that the elder children are listed as Hammond in 1891?

I am struggling to see a suitable marriage in 1854.  Might it in fact be Sep qtr 1877 in Eastry district (covers Gt Mongeham)?

avm228,

Thanks for reply.
It is no wonder that I am not very good at this.

I was staring at the Marriage Certificate yesterday and still managed to put down a date as 1854.

It is indeed 1877.
In fact 18th September 1877, the parish church Gt Mongeham. Charles's age is noted as 43, job labourer, wife Elizabeth Hammond (38) born Gardiner, she is/was a Hawker.
However he and his wife both signed with a mark so how reliable age's are I don't know.

William's job listed as Labourer.

Have looked on the 1841 census and noted 3 possible William's all agricultural labourers.
The key must be to see a parish record for Charles if one exists.

My Grandpa Charles born 1880 later lived in Buckland and worked at the Wiggins Teape papermill.

Thanks again,
Martin

Is Charles said to be a bachelor at the time of the marriage? This would be unusual at 43. I would suggest trying to trace him backwards in the pre-marriage censuses one at a time. If you cannot find him you may have to consider the possibility that he had a change of name. Sometimes this happened in order to avoid being pursued by a previous wife!

It took me some time to locate this Charles as on Ancestry.co.uk he was noted as Charles Lammer.
Anyway he could well be the one so thanks for that.
I will need to get  a copy of his birth certificate, there is a note of a Charles Lawrence born 1838
Eastry Mar 1838.
Will probably take a chance on that.
Wonder what the "Lock Up Station' was.
Thanks again
Martin
