He would have been Dr William Bell Carlisle/Carlyle, he was granted 2000 acres in 1828.

Land holder were often allocated many convicts and the Henter area was in growth at that time so many convicts went there.

1837 Convict Muster has James Diiggins allocated to G. G. Clark at Invermein, Hunter River.

For some reason I can't find a Certificate of Freedom for James Diggins, his Ticket of Leave was issued in October 1841 for the Scone Area, which generally meant that he would be restricted to the Scone area with conditions until a Certificate of Freedom was granted.

here was unclaimed letters for a Jas Diggins of Scone being held at the Sydney GPO in March 1848 which indicates that he was in the area around that time, about the same time his Certificate of Freem would have been due.

hello Gerry I only have the Ticket of Leave silly me thought they were the same thing. James died in 1879 at Yass and Mary died in 1869 at Burrowa they are buried at Burrowa Cemetery. The first child my 2nd Great Grandmother Rosannah was born in 1852 at Scone and and the second last of the 12 children Ann was born at Binalong. I am not very familiar with were these places are in N.S.W. Take Care Lynette

Lynette,

Official Parish record V 1852 2110 69/1852

Rosannah Diggins was born 29th June 1852 and baptised November 16th 1852 in the R.C Church in the Parish of Northumberland NSW.

Father was James Diggins, labourer and mother, Mary Keeffe of Scone.

I have a copy of this baptism record that I found today at the Qld State Library, PM me your email address and I'll send it on.

Gerry

Hi Lynn

If you Googlemap them you will see where they are.  Scone is north west of Newcastle in the Hunter and is about 450k from Yass, Boorowa (as it now is) and Binalong, so they travelled a long way.

Yass is on the Hume Highway,  and is about 60k north of Canberra.  Boorowa is about 60k northwest of Yass, with Binalong about halfway between Yass and Boorowa.

Do you ahve the death certs for James and Mary?  You may find that it is only the registration that took place in Yass.  It's tempting to see the place the place of registration as the place the event happened.  I note on the NSW BMDs that Mary's place of death is listed as Binalong, as are what would seem to be two of their sons - Henry d 1867 and William d 1871.

Hi,

There is an RC baptism record for Rosannah in 1852 but we can't find a marriage as yet for James & Mary, nor can we find a Certificate of Freedom for James as yet either, I would not have thought that he would have been able to leave the Stroud area without his freedom.

Sorry I didn't mean to question you - just pointing out that sometimes the place of registration is not the actual place of the B, M or D.  I do not see a headstone in this list for Boorowa cemetery, for any DIGGINS but the list only has those with headstones.

No offence taken Judith I just think it is fair to explain when people help you. When the chatters help me with my photos I always explain about the photo. There son James Diggins died 7th May 1936 Buried Boorowa RC B 951 this is from Ancestry and he is not on the list either. Gerry no I have still not found a marriage or a Certificate of Freedom and thank you for the baptism record you sent me. Take Care Lynette
