road traffic accident 1990 East Ayrshire looking for more information

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking into my Grandmothers death.  22nd Dec 1990 she was a passenger in a car accident on the Dunlop to Barrhead Road.  I have her death certificate and on it it just says injures sustained as passenger in car accident.  I have contacted Scotlandspeople for any information as well as national Archive and Procurator fiscal yet I have hit a brick wall.  Does anyone have any other ideas?  I have looked at newspapers and nothing as well.

The Procurator Fiscal is your best bet as that department would hold all of the information. The problem is the closure period for documents and that they may not consider a grandchild a close enough relation to warrant them allowing a viewing.

If there was a prosecution the driver would have appeared at either Ayr Sheriff Court (possibly Kilmarnock Sheriff Court)or Paisley Sheriff Court depending upon which side of the County boundary the locus of the accident was. Again the problem here is that Sheriff Court Documents are closed for differing periods before being passed to The National Archives (National Records).

It is extremely unlikely that the police would have any records as they would have been weeded after a 7 to 10 year period.

I am surprised that there was nothing in the National papers - perhaps contacting the more local papers like the Barrhead News and its equivalent in East Ayrshire may produce dividends. Again if there was a prosecution it may have been reported in the papers (although probably some time after the original accident)

If there was an Insurance company involved they may also have records (especially if they had to make a payment on whatever policy existed) but again you may struggle with the relationship problem.

the local newspaper is the  Kilmarnock Standard am sure if you contact them they will tell you about their archives.

Not sure exactly what sort of details you are hoping to find but are you able to ask family members for any details they may remember?

Mught be just a co-incidence but there's a recent Nova Scotia obituary which mentions a sisrer (deceased) called Mabel Ellen "Blue" Sanders of Stewarton, Ayrshire-

Archives of the Kilmarnock Standard are kept at the Burns Monument Centre Kilmarnock. I think they could be on microfiche?? Don't know how recent the dates of issues are
