Michael Bell Family - London, early 1800's
« on: Tuesday 21 June 05 04:16 BST (UK) »
My 3rd gr-grandmother, Clarissa Bell, was born in London in 1811 and died in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri, USA in 1897.  I have been searching for her family for years and finally found a submission on Rootsweb.com and queried the submitter for more information, as the sources were all listed as "private".  The submitter was the Bell Family Organization and didn't remember who submitted my family!  All I gleaned from this information is that Clarissa's father was named Michael Bell, he was born 1780-1790 in Newgate, England (?); he married Mary Anne - ; and had Cordelia Caroline, Samuel Upton, Clarissa, George, Alfred, and William.  The first 3 were born in London and the last 3 in the US somewhere.  This would mean the family left shortly after 1811.  I know this doesn't give much to go on, and I don't know if Newgate means the prison or it's environs, not being conversant with London suburbs, but can someone help me?  Maybe there is a city directory or the 1811 census that this family appears in.
Thank you.

Marilyn,

Have you found Clarissa and her siblings in USA census records?  What was Clarissa's married name?

The LDS database has a Michael BELL married to May Anne BROWN in  25 DEC 1798 Saint Mary-St Marylebone Road, Saint Marylebone, London, England.

The Pallot's birth index lists a different BELL family at the parish of Christchurch Newgate, London 1800-1820.

Susan:
Since Michael Bell is such a common name, and since only heads of families were listed in US censuses until 1850, I have not located any of the family except Clarissa.  She married a Thomas Dudley between 1827 and 1835 and he was dead by 1836 when she married my gr-gr-gr grandfather, James Easton Bedgood in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, US.  I know Cordelia Caroline married a Reuben Tharp, but I have been unable to locate this family--there are several Reuben Tharps.
Thank you for looking this up for me.

What is the Pallot's birth index and what does it show?

Marilyn,

Pallot's Index to Baptism once contained more than 12 million records, but most were destroyed in World War II. The 200,000 surviving records are a valuable resource for those seeking ancestors in the Greater London area. The dates range from 1780 to three years after the onset of General Registration in 1837. These parish christening and baptismal registrations (with some birth dates recorded) cover at least 22 parishes in London and Middlesex, around 27 other parishes, and there are many other miscellaneous entries. They usually give the name of the child and parentage, the parish of baptism and the date.

Name:    Alexr Norton Bell
Baptism Date:    1817
Parent 1:    Rob Bell
Parent 2:    Eliz Bell
Parish:    Christchurch Newgate
County:    London

Name:    Rob Norton Bell
Baptism Date:    1818
Parent 1:    Rob Bell
Parent 2:    Eliz Bell
Parish:    Christchurch Newgate
County:    London

Name:    Thos Bell
Baptism Date:    1820
Parent 1:    Robert Bell
Parent 2:    Eliz Bell
Parish:    Christchurch Newgate
County:    London

Name:    Wm Bell
Baptism Date:    1811
Parent 1:    Wm Bell
Parent 2:    Mary Wright
Parish:    Christchurch Newgate
County:    London

Name:    Thos Bell
Baptism Date:    1810
Parent 1:    Thos Bell
Parent 2:    Sush  Bell  {h is superscript; prob. Susannah}
Parish:    Christchurch Newgate
County:    London

These are all the Bell listings for Newgate.

Susan:
Thanks for the answer.  With the unusual names of the Bell children, do they appear in the Pallot's anywhere else in London, or is it too hard to search the whole city?  ( I mean the first three children.)

I know Clarissa was born in London because of a family history written by her grandson using the (lost)family Bible.  I suspect the Newgate part, only because it's unsupported by a source.

Marilyn,

There is no information in Pallot's Birth Index relating to your BELL family names.

In 1860 census I find the following:

Susan:
I just found that too!  I started looking about an hour ago and am following her thru the census.  I haven't checked on this line since Ancestry got all the censuses done.  Alanson is 33 in that census and Cordelia is 54 if you look close. (44 in 1850).  Looks like husband died 1846-1850.  No cemeteries listed for Boone Co, KY.  Will have to look further.
Thanks for the help!
