Marriage of James Henderson 1826 St John's Manchester
« on: Sunday 02 February 14 14:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm looking for a marriage of a James Henderson born 1806 in Sheffield to Mary born 1806 in Dover, Kent. They lived in Sheffield in 1841 and after.

There is one possible match on familysearch.org and Ancestry that is a marriage of James Henderson & Mary Smith, 10 Sep 1826, St John's Deansgate, Manchester.

If anyone has access to transcripts for St John's marriages, are there any further details for that marriage, like where they were from, fathers names, or occupation etc?

Thanks for any help  :)

He signed she left her mark
Witnesses: John Hewitt and Elizabeth Cooper.

Thanks very much Claire, that's great. I can rule them out now, because the James I'm looking for was a cutler, not a joiner.

Thanks for your help  :)

Hi

Providing I am looking at the right family in the census's, is there a reason their son Samuel would use the surname Pigott in later years, maybe his mother's maiden name ?   ???

Hi Claire,

That's the big mystery I'm trying to get to the bottom of! There is a chance that Mary's maiden name could be Pigott, but I can't find any records for their marriage yet.

Their son Samuel started off in the 1841 & 1851 census as Samuel Henderson living with James & Mary Henderson as parents, then he used the name Samuel Anderson in 1861 & 1871 census, but for his marriage in 1857 he called himself Samuel Pigott (but with fathers name William Anderson), and his children were baptised Pigott.

It's all very confusing!  ???

I've started a few threads about it www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=416276.0 and http://pub11.bravenet.com/forum/static/show.php?usernum=907514572&frmid=22&msgid=1126052&cmd=show
and http://pub11.bravenet.com/forum/show.php?usernum=907514572&msgid=1126132

Not sure I'll ever get to the bottom of this one!  ???

Hi

I've had a look round and it is quite a hard one to solve  ???

There is a baptism of a Mary Ann PIGGOTT 5 June 1803 St James the Apostle Dover Kent. Parents: John Charles and Elizabeth.
Could be worth trying to track her down to rule her out.

Maybe a simple falling out with his father could be why he changed his name to Pigott, and also putting William as his father.

There are a couple of obits as well

The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent, Saturday, September 14, 1867

PIGOTT ~ Sept. 8th Arthur son of Mr Samuel Pigott of Solly Street aged 18months.

Saturday, April 11, 1868

PIGOTT ~ April 4th Samuel son of Mr Samuel Pigott of Solly Street aged 10 weeks.

Hi Claire, thanks very much for those obits, they are for the family I'm tracing & I've found burials for them.

I'm going to try to find out more about the Mary Ann Pigott born in Dover, and possibly Mary & James might have married in Dover so I'll have a search for that too.

Thanks for your help  :)
