Old Family Portrait - Update
« on: Sunday 02 February 14 01:40 GMT (UK) »
I had previously posted a thread on this painting that has always been in our family, despite no one really knowing who he was.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=568605.msg4208218#msg4208218
I have since been sent a photo of the person I suspect he is and would like opinions on if they may be the same person. I believe the painting is 1850's (about mid 40 years old) and the photo about late 1860's. (in his mid 50's)

Hello Adee

I believe the two pictures are of the same person but the first,I suspect is slightly earlier than you suggest.
The one thing that remains constant throughout life is the shape of the ears, which in this case appear very much the same. The style of painting doesn't look right for the period in the first picture - could it perhaps be a coloured photograph? whatever it is, I think the gentleman is nearer to his 30's than 40's.
I'll leave it to others to prove me wrong, but I think it's the same man.

Regards

AJ

First we need to see all of the photo as it doesn't look 1860's to me.
The chap in it looks around 65-70.

I think it's a tinted photo rather than a painting....I would put the guy on the right in his 60s at least...I don't think they are the same person the eyebrows are different....they don't change shape...they just get bushier.

Yep my maths a bit wrong. He was born 1819 so depending on the date of the painting (1850-1855)?
was was between 31 and 36. All I have to date the photo is that the photography studio who took it opened in 1865.
It is definitely an oil painting on a sheet of metal (copper I think) It's large - without the frame it measures 17" x 15" 43cm x 36 cm. There is some damage where the paint has lifted off and I can see the metal below. Attaching the full photo - would be great if anyone could date that.

I don't think it is the same person, as treetotal says the shape of eyebrows do not change they just get bushier.

Is this all you have?
We need to see all of it + the back.
From this we can't tell if it's a CdeV, cabinet card or postcard.

Predictably I don't have the original. I do know it was mounted onto card and not a postcard so a Cabinet or Visite. As I said the studio it was taken at (William Lawrence) is very well known in Ireland and opened March 1965 so it can't be before that.
I have superimposed both in Photoshop and despite the different poses the positive physical matches are striking. Would be happy if anyone would venture a date on the clothing in the photo - that would be enough. Not sure about the eyebrow thing - plenty of other references, bearing in mind one image is a painting,
