BOGGS of Londonderry
« on: Saturday 01 February 14 11:11 GMT (UK) »
Dear Listers

I wondered if anyone could help with my BOGG/BOGGS ancestors? My 3 x great grandfather was JOHN BOGGS born 1757 in Magherafelt, Londonderry. His parents were John Bogs and Sarah Morgan who married at St. Columb Cathedral, Londonderry in 1746. That's all I know about them.

John and Sarah also had a son James Boggs born 1748 Magherafelt and daughters Mary Boggs born 1753 Magherafelt and Catherine Boggs birthdate unknown but she married Anthony Johnston and they had a son John Johnson born in Magherafelt 1796. These records were found in Magherafelt Anglican church.

Can anyone help me to go any further? I wondered how I might find people in Londonderry named Boggs who might be related? Or is there another way? Do you have any ideas? My 2 x great grandfather Edmund Boggs settled in England and I come from that line so I know very little about Irish genealogy except that records are missing, destroyed or not kept in the first place!
Best wishes France

From http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
About 1858 there are only a few Boggs in Londonderry, the majority live in Donegal next door.
Eg Boggs living in Parish   FAUGHANVALE Townland   KILNAPPY
TEMPLEMORE (EAST WARD)
Townland   LONDONDERRY
Boggs leased land/buildings in   THE DIAMOND of the city itself.
However by then there are no Boggs in Magherafelt
Earlier records include the Tithes of about 1830s I couldn’t find the county, plenty of Boggs in Donegal again.

From PRONI
Repository :   Public Record Office for Northern Ireland
PRONI Reference :   D1890/7
Level :   Item
Access :   Open
Title :   Francis Boggs, Rathmullan, Co. Donegal and
Dates :   26 July 1731
Description :   Francis Boggs, Rathmullan, Co. Donegal and Robert Harvey, Londonderry. Bond for £3 9. 6.

Magherafelt Council has an interesting item under its burial references ie

Thank you Jim

For your attempts to help me with my Bogg/Boggs family. Alexander might be in my tree but I have no way of knowing. Certainly it is not a name that has been handed down at all.

Names that are in the tree are John, often handed down. Edmund also often handed down. Thomas also handed down, Deborah handed down, Mary and Mary Ann handed down also James, Catherine, William, George, Godfrey, Ann, Caroline, Emma, Jane and Charles!

What other websites would you or other listers recommend for Irish genealogy?

Best wishes

I used one example from each of 3 websites, you need to exhaust all three before moving on
For example
PRONI
   1766 Religious Census
Surname :   Boggs
Forename :   John
Townland :
Parish :   Magherafelt
County :   Londonderry
Religion :   Established Church
Number in Family :
Original Documents :   The original documents referred to in this index DO NOT exist. No further information, other than that recorded above, has survived.

From that one clue I would attempt to acquire everything to do with Church of Ireland records in Magherafelt civil parish

Magherafelt
Diocese of Armagh
Churches:
Magherafelt, St Swithin - view a map of this church
Website: http://www.armagh.anglican.org/index.php/parishes/?page_id=195
Clergy:
Rev Canon Terry Scott - Incumbent
The Rectory
1 Churchwell Lane
Magherafelt
Co Londonderry
BT45 6AL

Another google search produced www.billmacafee.com/churchrecords/churchrecordsderry.xls‎
182 Magherafelt  Church of Ireland Christ Church, Castledawson. Formed out of Magherafelt parish and added to Ballyscullion parish – see under BALLYSCULLION     Derry Loughinsholin
183 Magherafelt  Church of Ireland St. Swithin's, Magherafelt. Baptisms, 1718-93 and 1799-1895; marriages, 1720-1845; burials, 1716-71 and 1799-1893; vestry minutes, 1718-95 and 1798-1909; confirmations, 1833. MIC1/1A*         [CL 126]    Armagh Loughinsholin
184 Magherafelt  Church of Ireland St. Swithin's, Magherafelt. Baptisms, 1895-; marriages, 1845-; burials, 1893-. In local custody    Armagh Loughinsholin
185 onwards covers the other denominations , one or two have early records. You might need to check all by the time you are finished.

I wonder if familysearch.com microfilmed some of these records and have since transcribed them on line.  They have a website that lists the batch numbers of a single church. Going direct to the local clergy often doesn’t work but if you don’t try etc etc
Anyway I have run out of time
Good luck onwards JimG

Hi Jim

Thank you again for trying to help. Unfortunately when I clicked on the 2nd link it said "ERROR 404 not found" What do I do about that?

The first one for the vicar at Magherafelt does work but I wonder if there isn't much point in bothering him because I already had a search done on these records which is how I acquired the info I already have!

I wonder if there is anywhere I could find out where John Boggs sister Catherine was born. Also there is no sign of her marriage there to Anthony Johnston only the christening of her son John Johnston. So where did they marry? I suppose I could ask the vicar if it was overlooked. Are you sure that's o.k.?
Vicars here are not usually expected to go searching for records. They are too busy!

Are there any people doing the Johnston tree if not Boggs?

Best wishes

Jim

Sorry forgot to say Yes Thank you I do have the Religious census record!

Also forgot to say about FamilySearch. It was on there I originally found the marriage of John Bogs and Sarah Morgan at St. Columb Cathedral so had a search done there and found it in 1746 but there are no other Boggs records there so they tell me!

The weird thing is that the last time I looked up this record again on FamilySearch it wasn't there! I wrote to them and reported it but they never came back to me!

I also saw that they now offer to do research for you for a fee if you fill out a form with a lot of info. So I spent ages doing all this but again no-one ever came back to me!

Has anyone had any success with this?

Best wishes

The John Bogs/Sarah Morgan is on the LDS site- Ancestral Files are submitted records and a good while ago they were separated from the more reliable extracted records.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/M71G-FDS

The 2nd link is for an Excel file accessed through Bill Macafee's site just use this and download from there-http://www.billmacafee.com/
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Jim

So they did listen to me then! I'm so pleased to see that the marriage of John Bogs and Sarah Morgan is not back on FamilySearch!

Shame they didn't reply to my email telling them it had disappeared!

Jim

I'm afraid the Bill Mckafee link you sent doesn't work!

Thank you anyway!
