Help Deciphering 1871 Kirklevington Census Entry for William FLINTOFF
« on: Thursday 30 January 14 12:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I was hoping someone could help me with the 1871 Census entry for my 2x g-grandfather William FLINTOFF.

William was born in 1844 in Deighton, Yorkshire and is counted at Moor House, Kirklevington in 1871.  Initially I thought he was living on his own as a farmer but upon checking it appears that he is living with his sister and brother-in-law Mary Ann & Robert Thompson & family.  The legibility (or lack of!) the handwriting doesn't help but it appears that both William and Robert are recorded as the head although it is difficult to read.

William was still living at Moor House in 1881 and it remained within the family in subsequent Census.

Can anyone shed any light on this.

Thanks in advance.

It could have been that William lived in part of the house on his own -he lived upstairs and they lived downstairs. In essence it was 2 separate dwellings in the same house.

Or, where you think it says head of household, I think it says something else. Can't quite make it out at the moment though.

It looks like Head of Faml to me, meaning head of family...  On FindMyPast the next image on from William's has a couple more Faml which are slightly clearer.  William and Robert share the same schedule number which suggests that they are sharing the property, though the address on the left for William is clearly Moor House, for Robert is looks like Mor hoes...!

They are living in the same dwelling!

The enumerators put marks to indicate a new household/family (\) and a new dwelling/house/address (\\).

There is a single line (\) after William, and a double line (\\) after the Thompson family.

Thanks for the responses.

William is recorded as a famer of 190 acres on the following 1881 Census at Moor House so if this was the same size in 1871, I would have expected him to have some people assisting him on the farm and his brother-in-law is recorded as an agricultural labourer.

The 1911 Census (where his son, Richard Henry is then living on the farm) records that there are 7 rooms in the dwelling so sounds like there would have been enough space to go round!

He may well have had people helping on the farm - but the census only shows who was staying overnight on 2nd April 1871.
