Hello Japeflakes.   Yes the source is  relyable/safe and secure.
I have downloaded file from this source previously on old Vista comp. Now I have got a new laptop running Windows 8.1 and they will not open. Actually with my wife being blind we download magazines of talking books to order from the rnib website.

If the download is available perhaps we could download and try it
Have you spoken to the RNIB?
I don't think W8 is the problem

Hello japeflakes.   I have spoken to RNIB and they have checked and it works fine, in fact one of their people as tried it from their own comp at home and it works. I have also check with a friend ours and they say it works ! This evening I will certainly look the two site you have indicated and post my findings tomorrow. Thank you. Jake01.

Hello japeflakes.  When the download  does not open, a window opens which reads: "word cannot open the file because the file format does not match the file extension.(C:\users\ALAN\...New_Books_37.docx"
Yes the download is available at the RNIB website: click " Borrow talking Books" click " New Books Magazine " click " New Books January 2014 " now download and open !
The last Microsoft download site you indicated for " Word Viewer " I think this will open it but should we have to go to these lengths when we purchase and expensive office prog.
Be pleased to see your comments.

The default programme you have to open Microsoft documents might not be the programme you have installed and confirmed on your computer. As an example, a few years ago I purchased MS Office 2007. Subsequent to this I purchased a new pc with Office 2010 pre-installed. Having paid good money for my 2007 version, I installed it on the new pc use it quite happily for most of the time. However, from time to time I have a hiccup because Windows wishes to use Office 2010 to open a file and it says, quite rightly, that I am not allowed to. What I do then is to open my version of office and then open the recalcitrant file from within my (fully paid up) version of Windows Office. Alternatively I right-click on the file and choose: "open with" and select my legitimate version of Office

cheers, falcybe

Hi Falcybe.  Thank you for that. I have only one office prog on my comp. This was installed for me by my supplier when I purchase the comp. I do not think that I have a conflict between two versions of office. I understand what you are saying.
