Place of Burial

In 1903 an ancestor of mine was sent to Holloway Prison for two months without hard labour. Whilst serving her time there she died. At the time of her imprisonment she was living in Chelmsford, Essex. Would her body have been returned to Chelmsford or was  there a dedicated cemetery for the prison?

I strongly suggest firstly you get the certificate registration reference and apply for that certificate.

It will indicate who the informant was and other info.   Then I would look for a newspaper article in the period surrounding the death date and thereafter.    I would then do a google maps search around the prison identifying all the cemeteries....   similiarly I would do the same for cemeteries and crematoria around the place of origin.    Then you will have the hard yards to see where and what happened to the relative...
A lot of folk died in 1903 and without a name in your post we cannot do a hunt for you....... but that info you may already have................

As I read the post, I do not think Oldfeller is asking or expecting anyone to do a hunt for him. Just for thoughts and suggestions on where he might do his hunting.

I think it would depend on whether or not her relatives could afford to have her body returned to her home, or if she had a paupers burial. If she had a paupers burial then she would be buried in the local cemetery. It is unlikely that the prison would have a dedicated cemetery, except that the bodies of all executed prisoners were buried in unmarked graves within the walls of the prison.

Thankyou to those who answered my query, and my apologies for a rather belated reply. It was a sort of general question and I wasn't sure how much detail to include. I do have the Death Certificate and the informant was the Coroner for the city of London. She was a widow and her children were very young so it is very unlikely that her body was transported home to Chelmsford. I have also searched the Burials for Springfield and Chelmsford with no luck.I wrote to Highgate and a very prompt reply told me they had no record of such a burial. I'll try some more of the nearby cemeteries and look for some records for Holloway Prison itself.
