No, I didn't know that!
In the 1871 census John and his family were living at 4 Providence Place

John Hitchcock   48
Sarah.                47
James.  16
George.  14
Edward. 12
Agnes. 10
Thomas. 8
Alfred. 6

Ref. RG10 69377

The Hitchcocks appear to have had 12 or 13 children.
John Hitchcock died in  first quarter of1872 in Lambeth, Surrey. The record says he was 55 years old and was born in about 1817.
Ref. Lambeth, London Vol 1d Page 348

If this is John's death registration he should be 49 and born in 1823. I suppose the record is only as good as the information given by the person registering the death. I cannot find any other likely death record.

Found earlier a baptism for John, with parents John/Ann but John's occupation is Haberdasher not Labourer in Shoreditch, so have not posted earlier, would love to find out about the Robert and Martha Hitchcock in 1841 Digby Walk and just who the James Harmless/Hamleys with apparently wife Susannah and infant were?!

Think John b c 1823 is just down the road in 1841 from Digby Walk

Death record looks pretty conclusive then but the d.o.b. May be incorrect.

I believe that at the time of their marriage John was living in Digby Street.

I found a report dated January 1848 which described The appalling living conditions in Bethnal Green. Digby Walk is described thus:

A distressing and degrading (place). In this alley which is in a state of the most beastly dirt. More than half of this horrid alley is covered with a stagnant pool of the most offensive and filthy slime and mud, in some places to the depth of a foot. Some of the houses which abut onto it are unfinished, but the yards of the older houses present a character little dissimilar to the stagnant gutter or ditch itself. The refuse from a pigsty drains into this gutter and adds to the pungency of its offensiveness. Foul privies and overflowing cesspools ensure much sickness and disease prevails here.

Not very salubrious!

I have found a baptism of a John Hitchcock born on 27th September 1801 at St. Matthews, Bethnal Green. He was baptised on 11th November and his parents were William and Sarah Hitchcock. I wonder if this is a more likely candidate for the father of John born circa 1823. I agree with you that he doesn't seem like the son of a haberdasher!

Cheers,
SVC

;D Just bear in mind that ( a ) may not have been baptised and ( b) Ilegitimate? And made up a name and occupation for his supposed father, see what you can find re family in Digby Walk in 1841!

If this is the correct marriage and according to the census of 1841 George was 30 and Maria was 25, then Maria would have been only 13 when she married. I have found a birth for Maria Taylor baptised St. Leonard's Shoreditch, in June 1814, parents James and Mary Taylor. Again this would make Maria only about 13 or 14 when she married. I suppose it is possible. Sarah was born in Shoreditch in about 1826, father James ( according to her marriage record to John Hitchcock ).

Hi

In the 1841 census, when completing the enumerators' books that we can view, the enumerators were supposed to round down ages to the nearest 5 or 10 for adults, so that Maria could have been up to four years older than stated.

Thanks, I didn't know that. I am still pretty new to all this. I guess I have a lot to learn!
