Lovat Scouts
« on: Sunday 26 January 14 14:15 GMT (UK) »
hi, wondering if anyone can identify the army officer's uniform please. He was in the Lovat Scouts and I think possibly there was initially 3 buttons on the cuff. However, is the hat, that of a Lovat Scout around 1901.  He was also in the Light Horse (inverness) - volunteers I believe.  Were they part of the Scottish Horse or Lovat's?
Thanks

The slouch hat was worn by many Volunteers following the Boer war and as such will not limit the ID to just the Lovats.

If you know this soldier was in the Lovat Scouts, then the likelehood is that this is the uniform of an officer of the Lovat Scouts, The Scottish Horse was originally formed in Natal South Africa from groups of ex pat Scots, The Scottish Horse wore the slouch hat with the added hackle of blackcock feathers, wereas the Lovat Scouts wore the slouch hat without the hackle and also wore the bonnet with dicing around, both the Scottish Horse and Lovat Scouts wore the three button cuff.

See some pics of Lovat Scout Officers in Inverness on eb*y just search Lovat Scouts.
I can't find any reference to Light Horse Inverness although a battery of RHA Inverness were attached to Australian Light Horse.

Thank you both.  I am told he was in the Scouts, but I don't have a date.  Their uniform changed around 1903. I have seen the images on ebay, but cannot see the 3 cuff buttons. With regard to the Scottish Horse - yes I saw that reference (Inverness-shire Royal Horse Artillery). I cannot find reference to Inverness Light Horse though.
I may have to pop down to Fort George - they may have answers.  Thanks again.

Hello James - on looking more closely at this photo I see there is a black plume on the hat. Pity I cannot make out the collar badges. He must be Scottish Horse which was preceded by the Lovat Scouts.  I cannot find reference that he and two others formed the Inverness Light Horse Brigade. Not as yet anyhow.

The original pic must be more clearer than the one on here, I specifically looked for the hackle but the leaves of the tree behind obscure any definition.
If you can see the hackle then he must be Scottish Horse and the small collar badge will probably be the pre 1903 one of Saltire on circlet with wreath of bay and juniper. if you could enlarge the collar badge it may have some definition.
Afraid I know nothing of the Inverness Light Horse.

James
