MacKay family of Harrington
« on: Sunday 26 January 14 04:07 GMT (UK) »
My g.g.g grandmother born Eliza Mackay or McKay in Harrington to James McKay and Mary Dand about 1833. James and Mary were married in the Parish church in Harrington 5 June 1827. Rector was John Curwen and witnesses were Isabella Dand and William Martiy?.
Eliza married Henry Dixon in the Parish church Harrington June 26 1852. Henry was a husbandman from Dean and his father was a Blacksmith. James McKay was a Shoemaker.
I would like to find out what happened to James after his wife Mary died and Eliza came to Australia in 1853.  I found in an old Harrington Directory 1847 that "Jas Mackey" was a Boot & Shoemaker and also a parish clerk.
I would be very grateful for any information people may be able to give.
Kaye Graham

certificate references on the freebmduk come under Whitehaven then Cockermouth for Harrington.
there was a James listed in deaths under .....

Deaths of December quarter of  1877  MCKAY James; 69years; registered at Whitehaven    [10b   360]

so maybe this is your chap.........

I had a look at other possible certs but this was the only one that seemed to fit the time scale.
someone else may be able to do a census or two for you........which would give more info
PS 3 posts and you will be able to use personal messaging system and other commands on rc....

Yes thankyou very much. Eliza married 1852 in Harrington and migrated to Australia 1853 with a daughter. She then proceeded to marry twice more and have 8 more children but unfortunately only 2 girls survived. I would love to know what happened to her father. Kaye

Looks like James remarried.

1861 census,
21 Ribton Lane, St. Bees, Whitehaven,
James McKay, 47, Cordwainer Master, b. Scotland,
Isabella McKay, wife, 36, b. Whitehaven,
Robert McKay, son, 3, b. Whitehaven
RG 9/3946/45/20

There is a marriage on FreeBMD in Whitehaven, June qtr 1855 of a James McKay. One of the two possible brides is an Isabella Hume.

Thank you so much to you all, for this information. Maybe Eliza took after her dad in marrying although she was widowed very young both times. This is fabulous information for me and I do appreciate your hard work for me.  Kaye.
