St Columba Musical Association, Glasgow
« on: Saturday 25 January 14 14:37 GMT (UK) »
A friend in Australia emailed me to ask if I could find out any information on this musical association in Glasgow. He found this inscription in an old family bible  “Presented to James Murray by the St Columba Musical Association as a mark of respect and esteem for him as a conductor Glasgow June 10 1853”. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I wonder if perhaps it was linked to the St Columba Gaelic Church:

Have found this mention in an 1879 newspaper:

Quote
St Columba Musical Association, under the leadership of Mr Brough, are to give a concert in St Columba Church, Hope Street, Glasgow

And, the following:

http://www.scottishchurches.org.uk/sites/site/id/5414/name/St+Columba%27s+%28Gaelic%29+C+of+S+Glasgow+Strathclyde

confirms St Columba's was formerly on Hope Street.

Quote
St Columba's (Gaelic) Church of Scotland was built on the present site in 1904.

Its extravagant facade is mainly down to the large compensation it recieved from the Caledonian Railway Company, who bought the former site in Hope Street to make way for Central Station (the main train station in Glasgow)

Maybe someone on their Facebook page could help with the history of the church musical association:

https://www.facebook.com/GaelicChurchofSaintColumba

part way down the page is a picture of the church when it was on Hope Street.

Or, Glasgow City Archives apparently hold :

Hi

Thank you very much for your links and the suggestions of the Gaelic Church. It all looks promising. I will pass on this information and maybe have a trip to the Mitchell Library.
