Mary Chevins baptism
« on: Saturday 25 January 14 11:21 GMT (UK) »
Mary Chevins, born circa 1786, probably in Egmanton or Laxton.

She married George Kipling in Egmanton on 24 March 1806, and was buried in Laxton on 9 January 1816 when she was said to be age 30.

I'd be very grateful to anyone who can find any baptism details.

Baptism details of any children would be much appreciated, too. I only know of one child for certain - George Kipling, whose age in the censuses is very fluid, with an implied year of birth varying from 1803 to 1811 (but I'm putting my money on 1806 or 1807). His place of birth is given in the censuses as follows:

1841 not Middlesex
1851 Nottinghamshire
1861 Nottingham, Edmonton

It seems likely that he may have had some siblings ... so anything that anyone is able to find would be much appreciated.

After Mary's death, George the elder was married a second time to Elizabeth Gabitass within three months - which also suggests the possibility of young children in desperate need of a mother - and I know from the 1841 census of five further children born after 1816. These are Elizebath (born circa 1819), Jarvis (born circa 1821), Joseph (born circa 1831), Jane (born circa 1833) and Robert (born circa 1835). The gap between Jarvis and Joseph certainly appears to suggest a possibility of further children born between 1821 and 1831 who had died or left home by 1841. So baptism lookups on these would also be very greatly appreciated - although not nearly so important to my research as Mary Chevins and George Kipling the younger, as they are both direct forebears whilst the other children are collaterals.

Wow! Thanks, Carol. That was quick. Just one question ... which month is 34??  ;)

I guess the "Jarvis" of the census must be Gervase.

I'd been warned that the Nottinghamshire Kiplings tend to have a LOT of children ... it's certainly looking that way.

I'm not all that familiar with Nottinghamshire geography ... guess I'd better look up where Lexington is, and try to fit all this together.

Aha ... that's a very useful piece of knowledge to have, too. Many thanks  :)

I have traced my family back to 1699 finding that the surname was variously recorded as Chevins, Jevins, Javins, Javens - Mary Chevins christened 22.6.1785 in Egmanton was the daughter of Champion Chevins and Elizabeth Moor.  Both Champion's marriage and Mary's christening were recorded under the name Tavins, Champion was christened in Egmanton 20.12.1755, son of Philip Chevins (my 4x Great Grandfather) and Martha Wright.  Champion died 18.9.1839 in Ragnall - his brother Philip being my 3x Great Grandfather.
Champion and Elizabeth's other children, all christened in Egmanton, were John (Javins) (17.4.1787), William (Javins) (13.1.1789), Philip (Cheavins) (7.2.1791) and Martha (Chevings) (26.4.1793).
