Almondbury - Joseph Crowther
« on: Wednesday 22 January 14 17:01 GMT (UK) »
On the 28th December 1737, Jonathan Crowther the son of Joseph Crowther, a clothier of Lockwood, was baptized at All Hallows, Almondbury.

At All Hallows on the 29th September 1757, Jonathan Crowther of Lockwood married Sarah Arlum of Lockwood. The subsequent baptism records of the couples children show that Jonathan was also a clothier.

Has anyone any knowledge as to the parentage, marriage, or burial, of the said Joseph Crowther?
If so, would they kindly share that information with me.

The baptist of Jonathan is slightly odd in that there appears to be no connected events; that is, no marriage of Joseph and no siblings for Jonathan.

Hi,

There seems to be 2 Joseph Crowthers in Almondbury records who is fathering children in the 1730s and 1740s --- one is from Linthwaite and one from Lockwood.

The one from Lockwood (ie the father of Jonathan) -- had at least 2 other children and probably more;

Mary in 1745
John in 1746

There seems to be a gap between Jonathan's baptism and Mary's. Maybe Jonathan's mother died.

Try looking for a burial of a female Crowther 'wife of Joseph Crowther' after Jonathan's birth. If there is one, it could be your Joseph's wife and then at least you will have her christian name and can better look for a marriage. Remember the couple would probably have married in the wife's parish.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

As parentage of a Joseph (the only one)

'22 Aug 1718 Joseph son of Willi Crowther abode (Not given) Occupation (Not Given) in Almondbury Parish (single line entry)'

When abode is not given? it sometimes means the parents of the sibling ! were residing or living in the mother church village of Almondbury

From CD Transcriptions Almondbury baptisms 1703 to 1848 HFHS
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Hi,
Further to Pennines post I've had another look at the burials and can only find the following as possible wife of Joseph:-
12th February 1741, Mary CROWTHER
12th December 1742, Martha CROWTHER
No age at death recorded

Many thanks folks for all the input which has all been added to my data base.

I have three Almondbury Josephs in my collection. Joseph baptized 18th August 1721, the son of Joseph a clothier of Hole House, Clough, Linthwaite. (That's two), and Joseph  baptized 22nd September 1718 the son of William Crowther of Hole House, Clough (as provided by Dobfam). On the basis of dates, the last mentioned Joseph might have been the Golcar resident buried in 1780 (as provided by 'Calverley Lad'.

Regarding the suggestion by 'Pennines' that Mary (1745) and John (1756) were siblings of Jonathan, there is a slight problem.

There were two Joseph Crowther marriages at Almondbury in 1744. Joseph to Elizabeth Willy on the 24th May, and Joseph Crowther to Elizabeth Balmforth on the 23rd August.

The baptism record of Mary states, "Mary d of Joseph Crowther jun of Lockwood clothier", and is dated 10th February 1744 (Julian calendar) which we would now view as February 1745, about 10 months after the first of the above mentioned marriages. The use of 'jun' to mean junior clearly implies the existence of a senior. I would suggest that these post 1744 baptisms probably relate to nephews and nieces of Jonathan, not siblings.

If anyone can 'shoot a hole' in the above argument, please feel free.

It does not give the 1721 Joseph on the Almondbury Transcriptions CD from HFHS but found a Josephus son of Gulielmi (William ?) of SL (Slaitwaite ?) 19 April 1711
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Joseph, son of Joseph - 1821 1721, and Joseph, son of William - 1718 are baptised at St James, Slaithwaite with East Scammonden.  Joseph, son of Joseph, has a sister, baptised again at St James and a week after Joseph son of William - that is 29 September 1718 and with the same abode.  I'm almost positive that the entry for Joseph, son of William states William Crowther Jun.  but no occupation for either William or Joseph in 1718.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
