Adoption Records
« on: Wednesday 22 January 14 14:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi my mum is trying to get hold of her adoption records, she has received a letter saying that the historical name of the Court which granted the Order was the City of Manchester Juvenile Court, does anyone know if this Court still exists or what the successor Court is. Thanks in advance.

hi mandy
does the letter actually say that mum needs to get in touch with the Manchester juvenile court or is it that that was the court that granted the adoption , only it sounds like you need to get in touch with either social services or Manchester city council to find out where the records are held .

Hi your Mum's records will be held by the adoption dept. of social services where the adoption took place. If she applies for the record she will be asked to under go counselling first.

Hi Trevor

It says on the letter:

You will need to supply the court with the following details:

Court reference number
Date of Adoption
Full original birth details
Full adoptive details

Historical name of the Court which granted the Order.

City of Manchester Juvenile Court

NB This is the name of the court at the time of the adoption, if this court has closed the records should be held by the successor court. Details can be found in the publication Shaws Directory of Courts.

My mum has been in touch with Social Services they got her to pay £15 to be put on a register.

She applied in July 2013 and she had her counselling in August.

hi
apparently the modern juvenile court is in with the magistrates court so the easiest thing todo is google MAGISTRATES COURT MANCHESTER UK  the first site should be the one you need to look at titled Manchester and Salford magistrates court .gov.uk  from that you,ll find an e mail address and phone number .
all the very best and hope mum finds what she needs .

hi mandy,
you do not say if your mother has  copy of the certificate of adoption, that would show details of the date of adoption. i know of a similar case where shortly after counselling social services handed the adopted person a form showing the birth mothers name and place of birth. this form enabled purchase of a birth certificate. As no records/info was able to be found by social services, the relevant   archives were asked about the existence of relevant  records. the archives then advised a letter to the relevant court giving the details  asked for on your letter. as a result copies of original documents were received.
the request must be made by your mother as i'm sure  you already know.
good luck with your request.  :)

hi mandy,
you mentioned a register at a cost of £15, is this for relatives who wish to be contacted?
often the birth family have no knowledge of an adopted sibling etc, so will not be registered and your mother may not hear anything. probably that would have been explained to her.
best wishes  :)

Thanks Trevor and Taffie for all your help I will get my mum to email the court in the morning.
My mum was given a form with her BM's name on it but she already had her original birth certificate.
Yes the £15 was to go on a register so relatives can be contacted she heard back from them to say that nobody was looking for her.

Thanks Mandy  :)
