Spring Gardens Lambeth

I am trying to find the location of Spring Gardens, Lambeth.

In 1875 my ggrandfather was married at St Marys Lambeth.

Their wedding cert. says they both lived in Spring Gardens, but has no number. There is only one Spring Gardens in Lambeth; it is a small triangle between two longer roads. There seem to be 11 houses in it. In the 1899 Poverty Survey it is classed as poor or very poor. This information was sent to me by my brother.

Could anyone point out, on a modern map, just where it is, or where it was. I do realize that there is every likelihood that it has succumbed to bombing and/or redevelopment over the last 100 years, but having some idea will assist in visualising the area.

Kay, thank you very much for that. I had looked at the Booth maps, but could not work my way around them 

I finally found Spring Gardens, I think, near the Vauxhall Bridge. The Booth map shows it as poor or very poor, as my brother said. I will have to try to expand the picture to try to locate the actual street. From the 2000 map, it would appear that there has been some redevelopment of the area. That means some more research

Hello, I've just come across your query about Spring Gardens, Lambeth and wonder if you have any further information? I realise it's been some years since you posted but my 4x great grand uncle's address was 2 Spring Gardens in the 1851 census. At this time I imagine the address was quite prestigious as he was Moses Merryweather, the famous fire engine maker. By 1872 he was living at an address in Lambeth - Clapham House, Clapham Common. Searches have turned up a pub/hotel at 642 Wandsworth Road but as he was still the owner of a wealthy company I'm not sure if this is the right place. I'd be interested to learn more about your investigations.

Louise, I think the property 'Clapham House' was to be found the south side of Clapham Common. Looking at the 1871 census and the surrounding properties, you have before the Merryweather household entries for:

Cavendish House
Holland House
Edgar Stables
Clapham House
Gardener's Lodge, Clapham House
...listings then move on to properties on Nightingale Lane

Cavendish Road and Nightingale Lane remain today and easy enough to locate on a modern map. I can also see both houses detailed on the Charles Booth map...but not seeing Clapham House on this yet.

Just found it. As you thought, it was a substantial property with surrounding land. Clapham House shows in the top left corner. I think if you google 'Clapham Common West Side' for a modern map, this will show you the area of the original location of Clapham House ( I forgot you can just use the slider on the Charles Booth map!):

Louise, I have not followed that side of the family for some time, but there is very little information about them, that I can find. It is most annoying

There may be more detail on other maps but none of them name every road, alley etc, but worth checking.
