THOMAS CREW(E) born 1810/11 Shoreditch - Full Name of FIRST WIFE ??
« on: Tuesday 21 January 14 11:00 GMT (UK) »
Help Please.

Thomas Crew(e) born/baptised 1810/1811 Shoreditch, Middlesex - Father George Crew, mother Sarah Corr.  He married Ellen Wildgoose born 1822 in Gawsworth St. James, Cheshire 5th September, 1842.  Ellen's father was John Wildgoose, ? a shoemaker.

On the marriage certificate Thomas Crew is noted as a "Widower" .  Does anyone have details of his first wife?

I have found a grave (No 106) in Holy Trinity Church, Hurdsfield, Cheshire with the MI as follows:-

"Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth wife of Thomas Crewe of Macclesfield who died May 19th 1841 aged 27 years.  Also George Thomas and John Joseph Crewe the infant sons of Thomas and Ellen Crewe who died June 1843

The names and dates fit, even the names of the infant twins (twins do run in the Crew family) fit the christian names of their grandfathers.... but, I can find no definitive confirmation.

Does anyone have any information that would clarify this matter??  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What was Thomas's occupation ? could maybe try for him in 1841 census as his first wife should be with him  :)

Hi rosie17

Very many thanks for your response.

Thomas Crew was involved in the silk industry travelling frequently between Spittalfields and Macclesfield.  I have found a Thomas Crew on the 1841 census with the correct age residing at a hostel attached to a Silk Mill in Macclesfield although he is not identified as "Widow"- probably my Thomas Crew, but at the moment I do not have firm evidence.   As regards his first wife Elizabeth, she is noted to have been buried on 19th May, 1841, and as the 1841 census was undertaken in the June of that year she would not have been recorded.

I'll keep looking, but again, very many thanks for taking the time to respond.

How do you know that his first wife was Elizabeth? The only thing you know for certain is that he was a widower when he married Ellen in 1842.
(The burials you found in Cheshire may or may not be Thomas's wife and children, and isn't Thomas from Spitalfields whereas the burial record says Thomas is from Macclesfield? I realise this may also be seen to be the case if he travelled there often)
Thomas's first marriage may have taken place in London....

Hi Ruskie,

Many thanks for replying.  You are right, I do not know for certain that Thomas's first wife was Elizabeth, but on the advice of our local Archivist and in the light of no other evidence we thought it worth following the information on the gravestone in Hurdsfield.  Thomas did spend time in Hurdsfield and at least if there is no connection they can be excluded.

It is the twins George Thomas and John Joseph that prompt me to investigate further - the dates, names matching grandfathers and a history of twins do seem to fit the family.

Also, I have looked for a Thomas Crew marrying an Elizabeth in Middlesex and I have found one - a marriage in 1838 in St. Pancras - Elizabeth Gray or Gaie.  However, before sending for the certificate I thought I would ask the wider community of family historians if anyone had any additional information.

Again many thanks for your response

Hi.

The 1838 marriage for Thomas and Elizabeth Gray/Gaie is on
Ancestry UK Parish Records and it shows Thomas's father as John Crew.
Wasn't his father George?

I had already ruled out the Elizabeth Gray marriage for the same reason, plus the fact that Thomas signed in 1838, and our man only made his mark in 1842.

There is a baptism at St. Leonard's Shoreditch on 21 Jan 1811 which joins up with the 1842 details and the ages given at censuses.

I have wondered if Thomas' first wife was Elizabeth Hatton, since his 3rd child with Ellen was Elizabeth Hatton Crew.

Thomas and Ellen seemed to commute between Spitalfields and Macclesfield, having children at either place. My link is through Edwin, who married one of my distant cousins and ended up as a newspaper editor and philanthropist in Leicester.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.

Thank you

To all, for taking the time to respond to my query.  All information is useful to me, although we don't have anything definite as yet for Thomas's first wife - presumed Elizabeth.

For "andrewalston" we have been in touch before.  Your Edwin is brother to my great grandfather Alfred.  I know you have done a lot of work on the Crew family.  If I can help with any information you might need regarding Alfred, please let me know.

I will leave this Post open for a few more weeks to see if anything comes in.

Again, many thanks to all....
