JONES of Trewythen and Trefeglwys 1500s to mid-1700s
« on: Saturday 18 January 14 21:23 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to trace the ancestry of Evan JONES who married Margaret CLAYTON (aka CLEATON). Parish register records marriage of "Evanriteus Jones and Margaretta Cleaton" on 26 June 1708 in Trefeglwys.

The book "Annals and Antiquities of the Counties and County Families of Wales" by Thomas Nicholas gives the pedigree of the Jones family of Trewythen, beginning with Bleddyn ap Cynvyn, Prince of Powys, 1064, down to (and beyond) a Wythen Jones (son of Evan Jones) who married a daughter of Humphrey Lloyd in the early 1600s.

The book, "The Montgomeryshire Collections, Volume 21" has a will of Hugh Jones of Trewithen, written 14 March 1607-8; proved 30 April 1608.  In it he mentions his wife Dorothy; son Robert (and his wife Elizabeth); daughter Katherine Jones; son Evan Jones (deceased) and Evan's children Hugh ("second son of my son Evan") and Dorothy; grandson Wythen Jones.

I think Wythen Jones mentioned in Hugh Jones' 1608 will is also Hugh's son Evan's son.

I haven't been able to trace the descendants of this family to determine where, or even IF, 'my' Evan fits into the pedigree.  It seems, from the name, that this would be the correct family.  Of course, Hugh Jones (died 1608) could very well have had a brother(s).

My Jones family is related to both the BENNETT and TILSLEY families of Trefeglwys, as Margaret Clayton (above, who married Evan Jones) is the daughter of Edward Bennett and Anne Tilsley.

The descendants ended up in Pennsylvania in the early 1700s.  Any assistance is most appreciated!

Hello!

I am a descendant of the Tilsleys and so have connection either by blood or marriage to all the families you mention.

I’m not so good with this time period but have been slogging away on this family for a while and would love to chat if you want to.
