HARVEY, Samuel - South Australia (Mid North)
« on: Friday 17 January 14 04:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I am trying to find some more information about Samuel HARVEY.  He lived in and around Yacka/Chinkford in South Australia.  His death notice states he was born around 1810 and that he was a colonist of 37 years, meaning he came to SA around 1854.  He died in 1891.

I can find records for 2 sons - Samuel Jr (d. 1903, married Mary Ann Sheerlock) and Robert (youngest son), 1844-1917 (married Esther Kelton).  Robert's death notice states that he was a colonist of 66 years.  There is also possibly an eldest son called Jesse, who was married around the same area and has a father named Samuel.

I believe they were all farmers.

I am unable to find a wife or any travel records for the family,  A few people on Ancestry have the mother as either Ann or Eliza but I haven't found any proof of this myself, and the census records in England don't quite match up with the information that I have found with regards to children and ages (not that I am necessarily correct or the children may have had slightly different names or died, etc.).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Jen

Is this your family...Robert and Samuel, sons of Samuel d. 1891?

SA BDM

1872 Alfred Hill HARVEY  parents  Samuel HARVEY   Mary Ann SHERLOCK   Kapunda   113/256

1886 Samuel Hill HARVEY   parents Robert HARVEY   Esther KELTON      Clare         380/308

It would suggest that Hill is a family name...maternal/maternal grandmother?.

The death notice 1891 has "...Bristol papers please copy"

Yes, that's them.  Thank you.  One of the possible parents I had was Ann Hill, so perhaps that is a good possibility.  I didn't notice the "Hill" middle names.

Thanks Chris.  Upon further checking, it looks like Jesse may have been the eldest son of Samuel.  All of Samuel's brothers and sisters appear to have come over to SA (I got this from someone else's research), but I can't find any record of Samuel or his family coming over.

Hi Jen10

I am an ancestor of Samuel Harvey and have been working for a while on the family tee. I still feel like a beginner so I will never say my information is 100% accurate but I have gathered a good amount of information and would love to see if your still interested in anything I may have?

Hi Abby,

Put up another couple of posts here - maybe with information you have on the family or something you are chasing.

Then you will be able to contact the original poster directly.

Samuel Harvey and Mary Ann Sherlock(various spellings) had at least 11 children
Jesse Harvey and Elizabeth Hellyer had at least 9
and not ot be outdone
Robert Harvey and Esther Kelton had 13 children

so there must be quite a few descendants out there.

Regards Dale
Watts Westcott Irwin Gammon - Devon
Marchment Gale - Wiltshire
MacLeod MacSwain- Raasay, Scotland
Gazzard Partridge - Essex
Grimmett Harris - Oxfordshire
Brien - London
Poyser - Staffordshire
Johns Morris - Glamorgan, Wales

Thanks Dale for the advice,

Ive just signed up so getting the hang of it.

Robert Harvey and Esther Kelton are my 3rd great grandparents. Their son William Kelton Harvey was the only one from their children that left Australia for NZ as far as I can see.

William and his wife Edythe had three children - Olive, Kelton (My Great Grandfather) and Robert (Bob) I have a lovely story about their lives written by Olive explaining their journey through NZ and upbringing.

Kelton and his wife Marjorie Hill had 13 children themselves (I think - could be 12) I need to double check my papers. My grandfather Rex Thomas Harvey was one of the older siblings.

I have recently been in touch with his sister who has sent me some of her family ancestry research which I have yet to add to my online tree.

What I have beyond Robert Harvey 1845 - 1917

His father Samuel Harvey 1812 - 1891 was married to Alice Etheridge 1809 - 1835 they had two sons:

Jesse Harvey 1831 - 1890
Thomas Harvey 1835 (Haven't finished research on him)

It looks like Alice died the same year as Thomas' birth - could be from child birth, sickness have not confirmed the why as yet, may not ever.

Samuel then marries Ann Hill 1816 - 1888 (the surname referred to in previous posts)

Ann is also referred to as Eliza Ann Hill in other peoples research but I have only found documents to support Ann Hill thus far, could very well be her name was Eliza but went by Ann.

Samuel and Ann had:

Eliza Harvey (Have also seen Eliza Victoria Harvey) 1837 - 1843
George Harvey 1838 (Still researching. Others have him connected to a George Edwin Harvey but I dont think they are the same family. I am sure of George as there is a census I have a copy of that shows the previous older siblings Eliza who was 4 at the time and George)
Samuel Harvey 1841 (Still researching)
Matilda Harvey 1843 - 1881
Robert Harvey 1844 - 1917 (My ancestor)
Eliza Harvey 1846 (Still researching)
Alfred Harvey 1851 (Still researching, unsure about this one but may have found some evidence)

I do have a passenger list of their immigration from England arriving in Australia 1855 which has

Samuel Snr
Thomas
George
Samuel Jnr
Matilda (but then crossed out saying she wasnt on board. But did make it to Aus at some point)
Robert
Eliza

This is still on going research as I like to be sure and always open for fact checking and changing.
