Hi David,

Thanks for your reply.

Do you know who Emma's father was? I think she is more likely to be related to the Joseph of Shottesbrook who I mentioned earlier but its just possible she was connected to my Horwoods.

Dear Jill,

Emma is as far back as I can get with the Horwoods. I'm sorry that I can't be more helpful.

Sincerely,
David Miller

I've found her on the 1851 census at Halls Farm in Waltham St Lawrence.

She's age 25 and born Shottesbrook, Berks. She's living there with her father Joseph 63, a farmer, born Waltham St Lawrence and her mother Eliza 51 born London, Middlesex. Also, brothers Richard (19) and James (17) both also born Shottesbrook.

Also living there are: George Young 25 yr old (born Reading) nephew of Joseph's; Emma Newton 12 yr old niece born London; and Lavinia ? a servant.

It looks as if these are connected to the Horwoods of Waltham St Lawrence, not mine. I hope you may be able to locate Joseph and Eliza's marriage and that you can get further back.

best of luck,
Jill

Is Emma Horwood, born in 1826 in Shottesbrook, Berkshire, the mother of Alfred Robert Lawrence, born circa 1860? (This is the man who married my great-grandmother in South Africa in about 1890.) If so, you have confirmed the identity of my great-great-grandmother and have provided invaluable information about her parents!

Many thanks!
